Nick Jonas puts a chain padlock on his teenybopper tunes and introduces us to a mature, dark and soulful sound in his new single, “Chains.” This song is pure gold!
The youngest Jonas brother unleashes his songwriting genius, with the help of music producer Jason Evigan, and showcases an entirely grown-up, sexy and sublime.
A voice similar to Justin Timberlake (pitch-perfect, pristine and still with a pop rock edge) sings, “Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me.” Please prepare for jaw-dropping action at this point in the song.
Consider yourself warned: This is not Austin Mahone or Cody Simpson – “Chains” is a powerful and emotional combination of kick drum-driven beats, a splash of bass-dropping trap at the intro and bridge, with ’80s rock ballad vibe that underlays the chorus.
According to Jonas, “Chains” is about a binding love and this song embodies that feeling. In the second verse, he sings, “Alone in the night ’til she knocks on my door/Oh no, wasted again but I can’t say no (no)/…/Baby tell me why, why you do, do me wrong/Gave you my heart but you took my soul.” “Chains” is a song to bump to with your friends, or a song to enjoy alone with your favorite drink of choice.
If you love tracks that send chills up and down your arms, neck and spine, then you’re going to be bound to this sure-to-be hit. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this song on the soundtrack for the future film, Fifty Shades of Grey.
“Chains” is by far the greatest, most inspired and powerful track of 2014 – it is pure musical perfection. I can’t wait for his new solo album to drop, sooner than later I hope.
