Check out the sophomore album from Grown Up Avenger Stuff!

Music Review: Grown Up Avenger Stuff – Sparkleton

Charlotte-based indie alternative rockers, Grown Up Avenger Stuff, recently released their self-produced album, Sparkleton, which follows up their 2012 CD, Alive. They consist of Deirdre Kroener on the vocals, Tyler Thomsen on percussion, Hunter Thomsen on bass, and John Thomsen on the guitar.

Sparkleton is an album of variety and contrasts. In general, it isn’t just a mixture of tracks and seems to make sense in a way.

“Some Of Us” is a track that really shows off Kroener’s vocals. It isn’t one that starts out with a lot of strength and power. However, the strength and power builds throughout. It sounds like something from the ’90s, which makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

“Too Cool” is definitely a song that you can dance to. I would definitely consider it to be one of the most energetic tracks on the album. It also describes someone who thinks that he or she is “too cool” to talk to you, which everyone can relate to because we have all met someone like that.

The title track (“Sparkleton”) is really awesome! The beginning is very slow and soft. It isn’t powerful or as intense as most other Grown Up Avenger Stuff songs, but it showcases Hunter’s bass notes beautifully and everything seems to come together into a mellow, beautiful track. Kroener’s vocals definitely have a presence but are much more understated on this song in comparison to other ones on the album.
