The screaming in metal these days is an interesting phenomenon. It’s like a big idiot standing in front of a microphone just hollering gibberish. But, the motif endures and lots of bands feature screaming. Even more interesting, it’s not all idiotic. Autumn Black’s particular brand of screaming and singing mixes well. Plus, there’s no doubting the thunderous power of their lethal metalcore riffs.

Beneath the Shadows, their first full length record, is an intense metal assault. Their industrial power is showcased in virtually every track. “Salvation” blasts through you with machine gun caliber speed. “Ashes” is incessantly thick and blistering. Next is “Nameless” and it’s got the same powerful rhythm as the rest, and also features an unforgettable chorus. The fourth track, “In the Name of a Rose,” is a tricky interlude. It’s a beautiful and haunting instrumental that lasts less than a minute (by two seconds) and almost makes you think the band is letting out a softer side. But nay, the battle rages on with the next track. And the next. And the next. And so on and so forth. The music never lets up.

There is sadness and sometimes a sense of doom in the words of their songs, yet they also have a positive outlook. “Ashes” proclaims: “We all shall perish/from ashes we arise.” Not a groundbreaking philosophy by any means, but it sounds cool in the song.

Maybe that’s the best way to describe Autumn Black: they sound cool. The music isn’t hateful or maudlin, it’s epic and moving. Beneath the Shadows is an album that sounds experienced, as if it has always been part of metal and always will.

The band obviously understands metal. Their songs never letup and the lyrics are strong, intelligent and synchronized well with the music for the most part. They’ve the musical savvy and the talent to be a great band. They are currently in the studio working on their second full length record.

“The screaming in metal these days is an interesting phenomenon. It’s like a big idiot standing in front of a microphone just hollering gibberish.”

I would just love to know what bands you are referring to because when you put such a spotlight on a band that sounds so over produced & inexperienced it leaves you with very little credibility in the Metal world.

It is so easy to pick this band apart. This guy’s screaming sounds like singing because he doesn’t have the raw power to do these type of vocals. The songs in whole sound wicked generic & have no guitar work whatsoever.Especially for a band w/two guitarists.Umm…Where’s the bass? The drums are triggered and sound pretty damn close to a drum machine. Hell, they probably would have done better with the drum software that Devin Townsend used on his solo album. These guys need to work on their structure & musicianship. Not just how many blast beats they can fit in a 4-5min song.

I would bet all of my BC Metal cred that these guys completely suck live!!
Definitely NOT an album worth buying.

THE GUY ABOVE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT.
THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING LIVE!!! AS WELL REALLY GOOD MUSICIANS.
THE ALBUM IS REALLY GOOD COMPARED TO WHATS OUT THERE TODAY IN THIS SCENESTER MUSIC WORLD!!!
YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM OUT LIVE!!!

I’m not really sure what you mean. I didn’t really have any particular bands in mind, other than Autumn Black, in regard to the screaming comment. The screaming thing sounds, literally, like the singer is an idiot screaming into a mic. A literal idiot. It sounds kinda retarded or something. I was just starting a really short review.

Other screamers, I guess, would be … any metal band that features a screamer. It sounds, at first listen, like an idiot hollering gibberish into a mic. After immersing yourself in the music it makes sense. That’s all that was meant.

And I do think Autumn Black sounds cool. Sorry.

Well,Mr.Hunter,I guess I misread your intro regarding screamers…I apologize. As for the album, I donot withdraw my comment. After only two songs,I assure that these guys are nothing to write about.

“THE ALBUM IS REALLY GOOD COMPARED TO WHATS OUT THERE TODAY IN THIS SCENESTER MUSIC WORLD!!!”

Yea,Maybe in Your “Scenester World”…Not mine! Believe me, I’ve been listening to metal for quite some time…Especially the extreme shit!!

I saw them live for the first time and they are unlike any other band that I know. Yes they may not be the best musicians but they don’t claim to be. Of a lot of the bands out there today that think themselves rock gods and display arrogance, only play the rock game then they are forgotten. Autumn Black however just have a love of music and the musicians and artists that make it. They are people that once you meet them you want to hang out with. I must say out of all the touring bands trying to make it big they are the ones I want to succeed.

I would like to give them credit for the show that didn’t go so well because of the sound and equipment malfunction. Their attitude through the bad was all,“ The show must go on,” and were ready to do an instrumental show if needed. I’m sure the drinks on the house (made possible by yours truly) lightened the mood as well.

The album was recorded by the twins in the band. They are shit dudes who dont know how to write real music. I am the FORMER frontman for this band. They LIEDDDD about me and alot of other things that I am not going to get into. I got my name TRASHED in reviews that we got because the vocals sound like an Angry Cat yelling and I DONT SOUND LIKE THAT!!! Overall the twins used to be cool dudes but kind of fucked me over. I hope they find peace with how they acted and how they treated our Tech and tour mang, “Nyph”.

Autumn Black sucks and they always will! Ruben and Albert Platt are JOKES that cant even really play! They tried to trash my name but the only thing that got trashed was the reviews of their records! Come listen to a real band…

Kaelo, I’m sorry to hear that. I admittedly have not kept up with the band since writing this review a couple of years ago. If what you say is accurate, it is unfortunate. I take it that you are part of a new band now, The Sight of Jupiter? Hope that goes well for you.
