Car Accident

There were 6,328,000 car accidents in 2003. These accounted for 2.9 million injuries and 42,643 deaths related to auto crashes. Almost 60 percent of children, age 14 and under, who die in motor vehicle accidents were unrestrained. So buckle yourself and your kids up! This playlist contains songs about car accidents. A tragic theme to be sure, but one that started way back in the 1950’s with the popular “teenage tragedy” story.

Many times it was love itself, which drove the teenage lover to their death in these songs as in Ray Peterson’s “Tell Laura I Love Her”, the tragic love story of Laura and Tommy. His love for Laura is the driving force behind Tommy entering a stock car race for a $1000 prize. Just enough to buy the engagement ring for his beloved Laura. Needless to say Tommy made the wrong decision.

Also, in the classic “Teen Angel” a teenage couple’s car stalls on the railroad tracks. The boyfriend returns to the car for school ring and is killed by the oncoming train. So again, it was love represented by a ring that caused these horrible car accident deaths.

These car wreck tragedies continued through the decades. Some of the most disturbing broke from the traditional storyline.

The Normal broke onto the underground scene in the 80s with the creepy “Warm Leatherette” whose lyrics painted chilling images in the mind of the listener.

“A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick – Let’s make love
Before you die”

The Sugarcubes also contributed to the car crash genre with the stream-of-conscious lyrics found in 1988’s “Motorcrash”.

“I rushed to the center
Saw the injured parents
Cuts on the children
An awful motorcrash
So dangerous motorcrash
So terribly bloody
Motorcrash”

This playlist contains some of the most memorable songs about car accidents ever written.

Well then, there is always “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangrilas. OK, motorcycle wreck…

  • http://www.cdbaby.com/X-15 Douglas Mays

Oh man, there it is. #21 on the list. Sorry folks, I’m foggy and in need of coffee.

  • HW Saxton

“I Want My Baby Back” by Jimmy Cross is
the funniest and sickest car crash tune
that I know of.It’s about a couple that
are coming home from a Beatles concert.
They swerve to avoid the Leader Of The
Pack and wipe out on a rainy highway.
The guy misses his girl so much after
she dies in the wreck that he digs her
up and crawls into the coffin with her.
As the song ends you hear some creaking
coffin hinges & what sounds like a guy
singing from inside the coffin. Sickass
tune but funny if you hear it.It must be
heard to be appreciated. Also there’s a
    song called “Car Crash” by a 50’s R & B
group called The Cadets (they did a song
“Stranded In The Jungle” that was remade
by the NY Dolls on their 2nd LP)that has
this guy crying pitifully throughout the
song for the whole duration. It is funny
in a morbid way and is a spoof of other
1950’s car wreck tunes like Teen Angel,
    etc.

With regards to #8 on the list, “Last Kiss”, J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers performed the original in the early 60’s. The song was written by Wayne Cochran before Eddie V. was even born.

Just giving credit where credit is due.

    Detroit Rock City
    Hot Rock Lincoln
(no, wait…no accident there, i think the driver got arrested..)

  • http://www.scopecreep.com/Rhapsody/ Robert Burke

I am quite aware of who wrote “Last Kiss” but that version is not available on Rhapsody thus the Pearl Jam verison is used so that it can be heard for those who wish to do so.

  • Taloran

1952 Vincent Black Lightning, by Richard Thompson. A wonderful, sad and mournful tune about love, motorcycles and death. From the album Rumour and Sigh.

  • Antfreeze

You missed a great one. Thunder Road, sung by Robert Mitchum. Killer. Highway 101 is the king of the motorcycle wreck songs. These are probably before everyone’s time, even mine.

  • Antfreeze

Actually not Highway 101. It’s called Black Denim Trousers. I’ve found both these on the net. Both should be heard, they flat rock.

  • JR

Don’t see my all-time favorite Brian Setzer song: “Drive Like Lightning (Crash Like Thunder)”.

  • http://www.markiscranky.org Mark Saleski

what about Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”?

(every time i hear it i want to drive my car into a tree!)

  • http://www.morethings.com/senate Al Barger

Double thumbs up on the Porter Wagoner. That song came out when I was about 10, and it messed my little world up for years.

You definitely need Roy Acuff singing “Wreck on the Highway.”

Also, you could put together a sub-section or even a separate disc with just the motorocycle crash songs. “Leader of the Pack” and “Vincent Black Lightning” of course. But also, you gotta have “Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die.” I bet there are a bunch more.

Then there’s Bloodrock and “DOA.” Is that a car crash or a plane crash, though?

  • JR

    Also:

“Don’t Pass Me By” – The Beatles
“Then Came the Last Days of May” – Blue Oyster Cult
    “That Smell” – Lynyrd Skynyrd
“Terminus El Dorado” – Ted Nugent

  • Nick Jones

I think D.O.A. is about a plane crash – “We were flying along, and hit something in the air”.

  • HW Saxton

JR,”Then Came The Last Days Of May” by
B.O.C is about a couple of guys getting
set up and killed in a drug deal out in
the desert, not a car wreck. “That Smell”
    is about OD’ing on drugs.

  • godoggo

    Riding With Mary, by X.

What the heck, here are the words:

they can’t go to sleep at four the car is parked outside the door scars of a knife on his arm her husband knows they’re together riding with mary protection to pass riding with mary protecting immaculate love rows of numbered doors behind the car warms up, the street is clear and empty and green with lights they talk and never stop moving he’s sounding her name in his head she’s falling asleep next to his face her sister’s getting married today and the saints of easter smile on the dashboard rides a figurine a powerless sweet forgotten thing so the next time you see a statue of mary remember my sister was in a car

  • godoggo

On a lighter note, who did that Dr. Demento song Transfusion, “I’m never ever ever gonna speed again…” ?

  • ClubhouseCancer

    Burma Shave:

And the spider-web crack and the mustang screamed.
Smoke from the tires and the twisted machine.
Just a nickel’s worth of dreams every wishbone that they saved
Lies swindled from them on the way to
    burma shave.

And the sun hit the derrick and cast a bat-wing shadow
Up against the car door on the shotgun side.
And when they pulled her from the wreck you know she still had on her shades.
They say that dreams are growing wild just this side of burma shave.

    Tom Waits

  • JR

HW Saxton: JR,”Then Came The Last Days Of May” by B.O.C is about a couple of guys getting set up and killed in a drug deal out in the desert, not a car wreck. “That Smell” is about OD’ing on drugs.

Yeah, I’ve always been a little unclear on the BOC lyrics. Your interpretation makes sense.

In “That Smell”, see the line, “Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars/Oak tree you’re in my way”.

  • http://www.musicradish.com Robert

Great comments. I guess it’s a matter of degree on whether a song can be included or not.

I included “Blasphemous Rumours” by Depeche Mode for example, which is really about anger at God for bad things that happen in life, but one lyric talks about a teenage girl being hit by a car so it mad the grade.

Not sure about “That Smell” althought the lyric “Oak Tree you’re in my way” hints at an accident nowhere is one specifically mentioned.

  • eric

i was wondering if n e of you knew the title/artist of that song, my god i cant even remember the lyrics, but its about this bf and gf who get in a car accident and the girl is dieing and the guy is singing about how horrible it is, i think its older, but its really good, i think its something like the night the lord took my baby form or something, idk please help if you can

  • brian richkel

Just to be nitpicky. It’s the girlfriend, not the boyfriend who dies in teen angel. And for my fellow rt fans, the hero of Vincent Black Lightning dies of a shotgun blast to the chest, not a motorcycle crash. Great list though. Another great dead-teenager song is Ebony Eyes by the Everly Bros. It’s a plane crash song. I’m still not sure about what happened in D.O.A. but boy is it creepy!

  • http://www.crashfetish.com/Songs.html Mike

Great list- But there are some others that deserve at least an honourable mention:
    1) Pile-Up On the Highway by Lisa Bade from 1978, covered by Grace Jones in 1980 2) No Return by The Third Rail (Joey Levine’s group) 1966 3) Hello, This is Joanie by Paul Evans 1978 (Charted) 4) Chicken by the Cheers 1957 5) Rocky’s Girl by David Geddes 1978 6) Come to Me Johnny by Johnny Victor 1960, 7) I Want My Baby Back by Jimmy Cross 1964 (Mentioned Previously) 8) Transfusion by Nervous Norvus 1956 (Top-10 Charted)(Mentioned previously) 9) The Beginning of My End by The Unifics (Top 20 Charted) 1968 10) Two Hour Honeymoon by Paul Hampton 1960 11) Message from James Dean by Bill Hayes 1955-6. 12) Car Crash by the Cadets 1958 (Mentioned previously) 13)Burma Shave by Tom Waits (mentioned previously.)

There are many others not cited, (177 more not mentioned on this page that I’ve documented), but most were obscure one-indie-45 artists or flip sides.

Regarding “Crawling from the Wreckage” by Dave Edmunds, it is on my list as well, but the “wreckage” is only a metaphor for a ruined relationship. It is “wreckage” by title only.

Regarding “D.O.A.” by Bloodrock: I have always recognized this one as being a surreal reference to drunk or high driving. The “flying along” is a drug and/or alcohol reference, while the “…hitting something in the Air” refers to an hallucigenic swerve.

Also, the entire “Bat Out of Hell” LP by Meat Loaf was created when he and Jim Steinman were wanting to create the “ultimate car crash fetish (album),” according to Steinman.

Great list, just wanted to add some essentials deserving recognition regardless of their online availabilities.

  • http://crashfetish.com Mike

Gotta at least mention one of those “indie” 45s that never went anywhere. It was by Les Art and the Dancsters on Fraternity Records about 1982, titled “I Wanna Die (In a Rockabilly Auto Wreck)” It was one of the best, but only a couple hundred were pressed.

  • Steve

Check out “The Road to Mingus” by John Clay and the Lost Austin Band. A recording ca. 1975 can be heard at:

    http://www.jhfarr.com/farrsound/

not the best acoustics but a brilliant example of the genre from a neglected genius.

  • sydney

this has been driving me crazy for a while. i remember a music video i really liked but i can’t remember the name! it started with what appeared to be a girlfriend and boyfriend fighting in their apartment, then the girl storms out and ends up getting in a car accident. in the end of the video, we see her boyfriend is a ghost too, and they meet in the street together, and then we see the newspaper that was left on the table, with a picture of the guy that said he had died in an accident. If anyone could help me out, i would really appreciate it!

  • axle64

BJ the DJ Great car wreck song

  • Czolgolz

Let’s not forget the country song ‘Three Wooden Crosses’ about a bus accident, or Garth Brooks ‘Papa Loved Mama’ about vehicular homicide.

  • BAAL

I’m glad someone mentioned Bat Out of Hell — it may be a motorcycle, not a car, but it is indeed the ultimate crash song:

…I can’t stop thinking of you
And I never see the sudden curve until it’s way too late…
Then I’m dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun
Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike
And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell
And the last thing I see is my heart
    Still beating
    Breaking out of my body
    And flying away
Like a bat out of hell
–Jim Steinman’s ‘Bat Out of Hell’

A great deal of Steinman’s work is inspired by the idea of the ultimate car crash.

An incredible band called ThouShaltNot (see thoushalt.net) has a song called “Crash” inspired by a newstory about a teenage girl that fell asleep driving and died. This is one of the most stunning Crash songs I’ve ever heard — the violin is awesome.

    “Crash” by ThouShaltNot

She fell asleep before she got inside from on the road
As devils drove around her at a thousand miles an hour
The dreams of lazy wishing and of promises bestowed
Were just enough to give her hands unlikely guiding power

From left and right the silent witness watched her as she flew
No cage around her body to protect her from the world
A lover in the form of barriers that quickly grew
Embraced her as a lover would embrace his wedding girl

With glass he kissed her on the lips the wishing-dreams now changed
To hyperactive craving beyond wishing known on Earth
The gravitation of her slow desire rearranged
The planets and the insects and the wealthy demons’ worth

And in that half a second that she finally had her want
Not waking, she was like a queen above the summer tar
With dream-built sceptre to her side and fools there to her front
She grinned, that falling empress for the fifteen meters far

  • miissy

Leader of the pack is a kinda sad song. Her parents are saying that he was no good for her. Her father wanted he to find someone new. So when she told him, she was crying and he wanted to know why. So then he wrects and when she went to school all of the students would stop and stare.

Oh I don’t see my favorite mentioned:

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
    Lyrics by Stephen Morrissey
    Music by Johnny Marr
    Take me out tonight
Where there’s music and there’s people
    And they’re young and alive
    Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
    Because I haven’t got one
    Anymore

    Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
    Want to see life
    Driving in your car
Oh, please don’t drop me home
Because it’s not my home, it’s their
Home, and I’m welcome no more

    And if a double-decker bus
    Crashes into us
    To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
    And if a ten-ton truck
    Kills the both of us
    To die by your side
Well, the pleasure – the privilege is mine

    Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don’t care
    I don’t care, I don’t care
    And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
    Just couldn’t ask)

    Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don’t care
    I don’t care, I don’t care
    Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
    Because I haven’t got one, da …
    Oh, I haven’t got one

    And if a double-decker bus
    Crashes into us
    To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
    And if a ten-ton truck
    Kills the both of us
    To die by your side
Well, the pleasure – the privilege is mine

Oh, There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out

  • http://www.musicradish.com Robert

“There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” is a great song, but it’s not about a car crash. It’s purely hypothetical.

Randy Travis – 3 Wooden Crosses.

  • GoHah

this isn’t really a car crash song but I wanted to throw a little flakey Beatles’ “Paul is Dead” detail into the mix–the story is that he was supposed to have died in a car crash: The song “Got to Get Yoy Into My Life” mentions “I was along, I took a ride/I didn’t know what I would find there” BUT on the back cover of “Sgt. Pepper” his back is turned and he is pointing to the lyric (in “She’s Leaving Home”) that names the day and time that the accident happened: “Wednesday morning at 5 O’Clock at the day begins…”

    I know I know–flakey, but fun.

  • Dave

Another song I don’t see mentioned: “Suzy and Jeffrey” by Blondie. It was the B-side to the single “The Tide Is High.” It is available on the re-released CD “Autoamerican.” It’s worth a listen just for the tire-screeching and metal-crunching sound effects at the end.

can anyone tell me the name of the song and the atist who sings it…………..in the lyrics the singer calls himself the “king of beers”, also saying. “dontcha know who i am…….i’m the king of beers”. the song describes a car wreck where the singers wife and daughter die. i think the song came out in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Ultimate crash song – Bat Out of Hell – Meat Loaf

OK so it’s a motorcycle not a car. Buts the character in the crash is

Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike
And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell

  • Bill

Bloodrock’s “D.O.A.” (1970) is definitely about a PLANE crash! The guy is dying in the ambulence and talking to his (already dead) girlfriend about how he feels – dying (“Blood is flowing out of my body”..) When they reach the hospital he is: “Dead On Arrival”. Paul Hampton’s “Two Hour Honeymoon” from 1960 (music composed and arranged by Burt Bacharach! – which sounds something like The Viscounts 1959 instrumental: “Harlem Nocturne”!) is about a guy and girl who were just married and leave for their honeymoon. They crash in the car in a deserted area and he lays there and talks to his dead bride as he is dying, saying why did this happen on our Honeymoon and we only had a Two Hour Honeymoon. >One of the sickest songs ever issued (besides Jimmy Cross’ “I Want My Baby Back”.) Did they actually think this would be a Hit or even played on the radio? (1960) – which of couse it was NOT! “Transfusion” was done in 1956 by Nervous Norvus (Jimmy Drake – a former Truck Driver turned music demo creator) and tells the story of a guy who keeps speeding and getting into accidents (car crash sounds!) and getting blood Transfusions (“Slip the Blood To me, Bud”, Put the Crimson in me, Jimson”…) He ends the song with the profectic lines: “Barnyard drivers are found in two classes, road crowding hogs and screaming jack asses – So remember to slow down, today!”. >Words to the wise…

  • Bill

Kelley, by the way that song is 1964’s “Last Kiss” by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers. “The cryin’ tires, the bustin’ glass, the painful scream that I heard last”…

  • Bill

Also note: “Warm Leatherette” by The Normal actually first came out as a single in 1978 (not the 80’s) The Normal was one guy: England’s Daniel Miller who also recorded as The Silicon Teens [“Music For Parties”, 1980]. For those who don’t know, this song is about a guy in a car crash who is trapped in the car and burning alive! The Warm “Leatherette” (“Vinyl” in the USA) is melting into his skin. Weirdest line: “I can see my reflection in the luminescent dash”. Yikes!

  • Kitty

Maybe someone can help me…I saw a video on fuse the other day and it had a woman in it who kept dreaming that her boyfriend left her in the bed sleeping and when he got into the car and drove out the drive way another car slams into him. It happens over and over again and it still happens when she wakes up..I just wanna know what it is…so yeah any help would be awesome

  • Jesse

BF GF crash, best one ever imo,

    Pearl Jam-last Kiss

  • Mojo

I’ve been trying to think of the song to this video clip for AGES now and it’s driving me INSANE, but no one seems to know it:

It starts off with a boyfriend and girlfriend waking up in their car after they’ve crashed into a swamp (or something). The car is slowly sinking, but the guy’s seatbelt is stuck, so he tells the girl to leave him, but she refuses. So eventually i think the car sinks in and they die..? I think.

The lyrics are about being in a ‘better place’ or ‘it’ll be alright in the end’ or something along those lines…

If someone knows this music video, that’d be awesome thanks :)

  • LBo

In the 50s, about the time of Transfusion, there was another accident “cutie”, probably a motorcycle. Part of the lyrics had something like “baby had her jacket on backwards and was all right until they turned her head around”….
    Ring a bell with anyone?

  • axle64

How about “Driving Mary Home” by the Country Gentlemen

  • Meggean

there’s this song from late 90s early 2000s.
it’s about this bf and gf going down the highway and like they crash and he’s talking about how either the bf or gf went through the windshield, not sure which one it was. I use to have the song but cant find it anymore.

  • Karen

thses are the only words I know to the song…they go through my head constantly, but i don’t know that title or the singer

oh where oh where can my baby be
the lord took her away from me
she’s gone to heaven so I’ve got to be good
so I can see my baby
    when I leave this world.

    PLEASE HELP

  • Meggean

Karen you are talking about Pearl Jam’s Last Kiss

  • Devan

And the person who wrote that song and performed for it back in the 50’s was ricky nelson

  • chewy

To comment #26, I’m pretty sure it’s Grinspoon’s ‘Better Off Alone’, if you haven’t found it already.

  • Joan

“Last Kiss” was written by Wayne Cochran about Jeanette Clark and J.L. Hancock, two teenagers out on a date during the Christmas holidays of 1962. Wayne did a local recording that did well, but the national recording was done by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers.

  • Holly

please someone help me i remember this songit was popular like i dont know about 5 years ago…its starts off with them in the car drunk i guess a boy and a girl, and i cant be sure if they were fighting or not but anyways they were hit from the side in the video you see the girl being put into the ambulance and the boy that was in the car is there too…but she goes to the hospital and at the end you find hes already dead even though he looked to be alive so anyways yeah its ust been killing me and i wanna hear that song again. thanks so much for the help guys. even if you cant help me either.

  • Alisa

    To #26 – That’s Nickelback’s ‘Someday’

  • Katie

#73, I think the song you are looking for is by Brand New and the song is called “The Quiet Things That No One Knows” I was thinking of the same song and found it in one of the prevous comments.

From comment #62. I seen the music video on fuse before. Ive been searching all over the web to find a clue of the name of the song and I still can’t find it. What I mostly reconized was the truck they used for the car crash. It looked exactly like my truck. Now im really curious what the name of the song is. Does anybody know the name of the song or artist???

  • Garry

I came here hoping to find a video about a car crash, that at the end had people crashing around in their home. I didn’t find it here, but finally did remember it, and it definitely should have been on this list.

I’ve been searching for this song for about 10 years now.

All I remember is that the singer is a girl who just got hit by a drunk driver. I think she apologizes to her mother in the song, maybe.

The song is from the late 1990s.
If anyone could help me out here, I’d greatly appreciate it!

  • wayne

    anyone know this song???
During the vid they are both in seperate houses/flats/apartments, looking out of the window, they both go for a drive (think at night) and crash into each other head on. Both go through the windscreen and fly towards each other in slow motion. Think they end up whirling around in the air together

  • Ashley

Hey. I have a question, that like no one seems to know the answer too.

In the late 50’s, early 60’s, cause my mom said it was when she was a kid, there was a song about a father who drove drunk and accidentally killed his children. The little boy was talking to his father, and momma thinks the last line is “Why, Daddy, why did you have to kill us?” Or something along those lines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Ashley

My favourite car crash song is still Private Andrew Malone. Cannot remember who it’s by, but I adore the song :)

  • Ashley

new car crash song to add, though not about the crash itself, is Joey by Sugarland. Love that song.

  • Kat

Does anyone remember a song written years ago about a bride and groom on their honeymoon he leaves to buy her flowers or wine and is killed. She waits for years for him to return and they found her in her wedding gown many years later she died still wearing it. Ashley wanted to know about the song about the dad who kills his children driving drunk. The name of that song is “The Drunken Driver”. Ricky Skaggs did the song a few years back but it was written in the forties.

  • Kat

There are quite a few old songs about car crashes. “The Kneeling Drunkards Prayer”..by The Louvin Brothers, “Wreck on The Highway”, by Hank Williams. “The Drunken Driver”. I’m probably a great deal older than most of you so I do know more about the older songs. You all are great. Thanks!

  • Tara

To answer #27 the music video is someday by nickelback

  • DMB Fan

What about Crash by Dave matthews band…I assume that counts?

I can’t think of the name of this song. In the music video, there is a guy and a girl, and apparently they are in love(not sure if this is true or not)but they are in a bad car accident, and they both die, but they appear as ghosts outside of their car and can see their bodies and they are shocked, i also remember a part about them having to walk out of a tunnel and they eventually come to the crash

Anyone here know this song by a Canadian band? The girl is walking through the hospital looking for her boyfriend but she talks to people and they dont respond. Apparently, she is dead. Her boyfriend is in very critical condition and they are then shown driving together and they get into a bad car accident and when the accident happens, the family (boys I think) is shown flying all over the place. At the end, the boy lives thanks to the girl touching him and then she goes to heaven. Please anyone know this song and the name of the group?

there was a more alternative group that had a boyfriend and girlfriend, who both had tattoos and whatnot (the girl had a short pixie cut), the girl woke up and looked at a picture or something then left but then there’s like a flashback or something and then the bf wakes up after they have a fight or something and he pulls out of the apartment parking lot and pulls into the street as another car slams into the drivers side. it shows that accident two or three times and the girl always wakes up to that dream and comes running out to find its happened. i dont remember what song it was but the music video always touched me

I remember seeing a music video when I was little. It was about a woman getting in a car crash that wasn’t her fault and she ends up being pinned against a tree. The car crushes her in half and they know she won’t make it from this car crash once they remove the car. They call her husband and he rushes down and he’s leaning on the hood of the car holding her hand until she passes away. Its a slow song. It had to be sometime in the 90s or late 80s. I can’t remember what it was called. If someone knows please help me!
