Movies (also known as films) are moving pictures made by special cameras that record live action or animation on a strip of photographic film. They can be artistic expressions, popular entertainment, or a way of recording or documenting an event for posterity. Especially in the U.S. movies have become not only a popular form of entertainment, but a profitable industry as well. Many bloggers write about the business, creation, and enjoyment of movies. The impact of movies on popular culture has been powerful.
Beginning in 1929, The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recognized excellence in the film industry wth the Oscars (also known as the Academy Awards), which honor those in front of the camera as well as behind it. The Awards were televised by NBC in 1953 and then later brought to ABC in 1960.
Another organization that honors movies is the American Film Institute. The AFI has compiled a list of the greatest movies and actors of all time. Among the top movies of all time are Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz. The list of the greatest actors of all time includes Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, and Katherine Hepburn.
The future of movies is evolving. Digital technology has considerably lowered the expense involved in producing a movie and many filmmakers are shooting digital video instead of film. Companies such as Netflix, which allow movie lovers to rent DVDs and watch movies online, may in the future be able to showcase first-run movies. Sites such as YouTube have developed special areas that allow filmmakers to distribute more independent content without having to go through the process of getting a regular television network or film studio to distribute their work.
