Sex trafficking is a huge subject being brought up all around the world, but how much do you really know about it?  Did you know that it is customary in some cultures?  Did you know that it is one of the largest growing industries?  Did you know it happens in America?

Nefarious: Merchant of Souls is a documentary made by Benjamin Nolot in order to expose the dark secrets of the sex trafficking Industry. Filmed in 2011 and released in 2012, Nefarious is a raw documentary that gives a firsthand look of what happens when a society becomes controlled by lust.

The film takes viewers across three different continents as the director takes an in-depth look at trafficking in Europe, Thailand, Cambodia, the United States, and other places. Each city has its own story and its own practices, but one thing is the same across the globe — sex trafficking is a devastating problem, and it is a much larger problem than most people realize.

Throughout the piece, the audience experiences the truth of trafficking within each continent.  In Thailand, the issue is so common it is almost tradition.  Families trade their daughters for televisions, recliners, and other items of prestige on a regular basis.

A look at the Red Light District in Amsterdam shows the legal side of the industry.  Nolot interviews shopkeepers and legal forces in the city to get a different perspective on the issue and see what may be happening that the average person doesn’t realize.

Finally, the film interviews former prostitutes from Las Vegas, Nevada.  There, it tells the devastating story of people being victimized and sold for the profit of strange men.

Despite the dismay portrayed throughout the film, the ending comes with hope and help for the victims of the sex trafficking industry.  One gym operator overseas explains the joy he receives from helping save the children, and encourages viewers to do what they can to help as well.

Producer, writer, and director of the film, Bejamin Nolot, is also the founder and president of Exodus Cry ministries. The ministry and the film have partnered together to help shed light on this well-kept secret. Exodus Cry is an international anti-trafficking organization that aims at bringing hope and healing to the sex trafficking industry.

Nefarious: Merchant of Souls is part one of a three-film series shot around the world. The second and third films are still in production, but they are projected to be out soon. In the mean-time, the first film is making its debut by touring around the United States and Canada with free screenings.

After spending a whole semester researching sex trafficking, the disaster upon us was not something of which I was unaware. However, this film put the situation in a whole new light for me, broadening my knowledge with the subject. I feel strongly that every person should see this film, no matter how little or how much knowledge they currently have. From hard facts to real emotion, this film captures every angle of the sex trafficking situation with an intriguing and gripping perspective.  More information is available at the film’s website.
