Welcome back to the Movie Media column, featuring trailers, posters, and clips for upcoming films. Some are nice and fresh and some aren't. However, they all have something in common: for better or worse, they all caught my attention. If there is a poster or trailer you think I should check out, be sure to let me know.
This week's movie goodies include posters, stills, and trailers for a few upcoming summer hits, an indie flick, a few upcoming television shows, a trailer for one of my favorite films, and more!
Tropic Thunder – Poster, Trailer
This movie looks like it is going to be very funny. This new red band trailer had me laughing out loud. I tell you, Robert Downey, Jr. is on one heck of a roll. I am actually really looking forward to this, even if the latest poster is just a lame combination of the previously released character posters.
Fringe – Trailer
No, it's not a new movie. It is a new television show coming to Fox this fall. A fact that probably means it will be canceled after a few episodes that have been aired out of order. Hopefully, I will be proven wrong, and this will turn out to be the mysterious, interesting, quality show that I want it to be. This trailer does induce memories of The X-Files, in a good way. The show is the brainchild of JJ Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci, featuring a cast led by Joshua Jackson. Take a look, and hope for the best.
Dollhouse – Trailer
JJ Abrams is not the only guy championing a new show to television this fall. Joss Whedon is returning as well. Whedon was last seen with Firefly and its subsequent film, Serenity. Now, he is back on Fox with Dollhouse, a series featuring Buffy alum Eliza Dushku. The series is about a group of operatives who have volunteered for a program where their personalities are wiped so they can be implanted with various personas and abilities required by whatever mission they are needed for. It is an interesting concept about what makes a person a person, and if that spark can be completely erased. Hopefully this will not go the way of so many other interesting Fox shows.
The Cleveland Show – Teaser
Well, it looks like the rumors are true. Family Guy is getting a spin off. As you can tell by the title, which may change by the time it airs, the show centers on Peter's friend Cleveland. The teaser doesn't offer much aside from a bunch of Family Guy clips, but the tune is kind of catchy, no?
War, Inc. – Stills, Clip
This film opened in limited release this past weekend. It is a political satire starring John Cusack concerning war and the Middle East. I think it looks pretty good and hope that it goes wider. Below are a few new stills and a clip of Hillary Duff as Yonica Babyyeah singing "Baby I Want To Blow…. you." The way both Cusacks (John and Joan) react is priceless.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – Trailer
I am looking forward to this. I know that I will probably catch a little flack for that, but I don't care. The first two films were plenty of fun. Sure, they were pure popcorn fluff, but they were definitely fun. This third outing looks to be more along those lines. Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O'Connell, this time fighting the undead on the other side of the world, where Jet Li plays the evil mummy. Joining Fraser and Li are Michelle Yeoh and Maria Bello (replacing Rachel Weisz).
Wanted – Stills
Later this summer, graphic novel turned movie, Wanted, will be hitting the big screen. It promises explosive action and plenty of bullets as it hurls James McAvoy and Angelina across the screen. I have gotten a hold of a bunch of new production skills to help you get ready. Do you think this will be any good? I am hoping it will be fun, if nothing else, Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch) is at the helm and he brings an inventive visual style with him. Hopefully it will translate to Hollywood.
The Crow – Trailer
I love this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movies. I will never go so far as to call it one of the best, but it has struck a chord with me and has stayed with me a long time. It is one of the first movies I ever saw more than once on the big screen. Brandon Lee was destined to be a star, and this was the movie that was going to do it had it not been for the tragedy that occurred during the filming that resulted in his death. Anyway, here is one of the trailers used for the film's promotion:
Space Chimps – Poster, Trailer
This July we are set to get the animated adventures of chimps in space in a move called, wait for it, Space Chimps. It is being marketed as being from one of the guys behind Shrek. I can only hope they don't mean the third one. Anyway, this does not look all that good, but it could be funny. The best thing about the trailer is the presence of Patrick Warburton – that guy has just an amazing voice.
