It is something out of a dystopian alt-rock dream, laced with moments of hard rock nostalgia that transverse eras. Hints of influence from ‘90s hitters Incubus and Temple of the Dog run through their sound—they even manage to smuggle in a few Hendrix style guitar riffs—all the while keeping the music innovative and unique. Australian alternative rock group Monks of Mellonwah definitely stands on their own and bring their own flavor to the proverbial table.

Monks of Mellonwah will be traveling to the United States to perform at the 2012 Los Angeles Music Awards in mid-November. The Monks have received three award nominations as part of the event, including “Best International Artist.” The Music Awards will mark the Monks’ second excursion to the States and serve as a kick-off for a short tour across the California and Northeast regions.

This year has proven to be a very busy year for the Monks following their “Best Indie Rock Band” win at the 2012 Artists in Music Awards early in the year. June brought the release of their second EP Neurogenesis, which received a scattering of accolades including MTV airplay for their “Neverending Spirit” music video, exposing them to a more international audience. Most recently, Monks of Mellonwah completed an Australian national tour and are excited to be heading to the United States for a more in-depth visit. Of their return to the U.S., Monks’ guitarist, Joe de la Hoyde had this to say: “We are so pumped to be returning to the U.S. and playing at the L.A. Music Awards. Being able to tag a tour and some recording on the back of the awards show is just fantastic and a dream come true.”

While in L.A. they will be recording new tracks to be included on their as-yet-untitled debut release, slated for early 2013. As part of this, they have elicited the services of Grammy-winning producer Keith Olsen (who has worked with major rock acts including Ozzy Osbourne, Pat Benatar and Heart, to name a few) for three tracks, having chosen to produce the rest of the effort on their own terms.

The Los Angeles Music Awards will be held at the Avalon Theatre on November 15. A preliminary itinerary for the Monks’ U.S. trip is below, with more dates to be announced as schedules are confirmed.
