Microsoft has revealed its new tablet called ‘Surface’ in a press conference at Milky Studios in Los Angeles, California. The tablet will run on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system. With this launch, Microsoft has not only entered the tablet market but also set up a challenge to Apple’s iPad.

The product was announced by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Speaking at the conference Mr.Ballmer described the new tablet as a hardware innovation specially designed for Windows 8 OS. Microsoft didn’t make any announcement regarding the market price of the tablet, however, nor did it declare the device’s release date. Microsoft did promise that prices would be competitive and affordable.

Microsoft Surface will be available in two different versions: ‘Windows 8 RT’ and ‘Windows 8 Pro.’ The Windows 8 RT version will run on ARM Processors and will have a 10.6-inch HD Display screen. The 9.3 mm thick tablet will weigh about 676 grams. The version is also provided with Microsoft Office Home and the Student 2013 suite. Users will have to choose between 32 or 64 GB of internal memory. The device also supports microSD external storage and USB 2.0.

The Windows 8 Pro version will run on Intel processors and will be 13.5 mm thick and weigh about 903 grams. This version will have the same screen size as the RT version but a full high-definition screen. It also has a higher battery capacity than the RT version. Users can once again choose between 64 and 128 GB of storage. The tablet will have microSDXC, USB 3.0, and a battery rating of 42WH.

Apple is the leading tablet manufacturer while Microsoft has a large database of users. Therefore, it’s clear that there will be tough competition ahead between these two companies.
