Lions Save Girl From Abduction

Score one for the animal kingdom. Here.

Three Ethiopian lions scared off several men who were trying force marriage upon a 12-year-old girl to one of the men. The men had abducted the young girl and beat her. Police suspect that the lions mistakened the girl’s cries for lion cub whimpers, which kind of explains why the girl wasn’t eaten by the lions.

“Kidnapping young girls has long been part of the marriage custom in Ethiopia. The United Nations estimates that more than 70 percent of marriages in Ethiopia are by abduction, practiced in rural areas where most of the country’s 71 million people live.”

Too bad there aren’t more lions in the world to help protect more of these young girls from abduction. It’s human actions like these that make the animal kingdom much less frightening. I’d say 99% of all animals are harmless to humans, but with so many of them dying and suffering at our hands, directly or indirectly, it is hard to blame them for attacking us in those rare occasions. I certainly sympathize with animals, and hopefully an event where lead species of the animal kingdom can show sympathy is enlightening.
