Lego Technic (formerly Expert Builder Series / Technical Sets), renamed in 1984 as simply Technic, expands the traditional brick-like structure of Lego to include interconnecting plastic rods and parts.

Technic allows the users to create more advanced models with more complex movable arms, such as machines with wheels. Technic sets often include pieces such as gears, beams, pins and axles. Others come with pneumatic pieces or electric motors.

The Technic line also introduced “studless” parts. Although advantageous in many regards, it also has some downfalls. Studless construction often requires the user to think five or six steps ahead.

Beginning in 2006, Lego started to include studded bricks back into the Technic line, as seen in sets such as 8421 and Lego Technic Mobile Crane.
