Two of the best reign supreme with blues fans in this week's Blues Power Rankings...

Legends: Buddy Guy’s Living Proof Top Selling Blues Album, James Cotton #1 At Radio

The surge begins for Buddy Guy, who is #1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart and #2 at Blues Radio in this week’s Blues Power Rankings.

James Cotton makes what I believe is his third trip to the #1 spot at radio this week, followed by Guy, Robin Rogers, JJ Grey & Mofro, and Kenny Neal’s Hooked On Your Love.  I haven’t gotten a chance to write my review of Jim Byrnes’ upcoming release Everywhere West but BC writer extraordinaire Jordan Richardson has and I always recommend checking out what he has to say on a record.  I’ve listened to it but haven’t had time to gather my thoughts.  I look forward to sharing them with you soon as well as on some of these other great records.

As we head into the final weeks of 2010 and I gaze just at this list, I feel my mind melting at the prospect of assembling a list of this year’s best releases.  I can already tell I need to do a blues and non-blues list because there have been too many great records.  That’s one of the great oddities amid the doom and gloom you hear about the state of music and the music industry.  The industry is crumbling but the art remains powerful and vibrant.  Take a glance at my reviews of some of these records.  There’s no excuse for not finding something great to listen to.  I’m especially fond of Ronnie Ear’s Spread The Love and Duke Robillard’s Passport To The Blues, both from Stony Plains Records.

On the albums chart, Guy knocks Kenny Wayne Shepherd from the top slot, a spot he’d held for the previous two weeks.  Shepherd’s live album comes in at #2.  Joe Bonamassa has his live set as well as most recent studio effort in the Top 10 along with Derek Trucks Band and Steve Miller Band.
