According to reports by ESPN late Tuesday night, Lane Kiffin has agreed to become the next coach at Southern California.

Pete Carroll resigned earlier this week to take multiple postions, including head coach, with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

The ESPN sources stated that Kiffin will bring his father and defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, as well as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron to Southern Cal with him. Wide receivers coach Kippy Brown is slated to be named interim head coach at Tennessee.

Kiffin, who just completed this first year at Tennessee where he led the Volunteers to a 7-6 record, was once offensive coordinator for the Trojans. He joined the USC staff in 2001 working with wide receivers and tight ends. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2005 after Norm Chow left USC for the same position with the Tennessee Titans.

Kiffin was hired by the Oakland Raiders in 2007, making him the youngest head coach in Raiders history. His tenure lasted only one complete season (4-12 record) and four games into his second season (after starting 1-3), he was fired.

Kiffin has been a lightning rod of controversy since his arrival at Tennessee who hired him after firing long time coach, Phillip Fulmer, in 2008.

About J. Newcastle

  • This is the weirdest coaching offseason since … last year.

  • J. Newcastle

Agree. I can’t wait to see Tennessee’s short list.

You think somewhere in Lubbock, TX, Tommy Tuberville is kicking himself?

  • All they need to do is come crawling back to Dave Clawson, now that they know the bad offense wasn’t his fault.

  • Tony

How is this guy ever going to have any credibility with recruits?

  • Is this an opportunity for Leach?

  • J. Newcastle

I don’t think UT will go after Leach because of the controversy surrounding his dismissal at Texas Tech.

I’m not sure where they go – maybe Will Muschamp, but I don’t think he’d leave Texas at this point.
