Lance Armstrong’s Life Story Flick Spawns Gay Rumors, Lots Of Publicity

The first thing to note in all this is that Lance Armstrong (34), Matthew McConaughey (36) and Jake Gyllenhaal (25) are really good friends and bike buddies, and have been for years.

Jake Gyllenhaal (an avid cyclist) has put himself into rigorous training in an all-out bid to play Lance Armstrong in a possible Sony movie of the 7-time Tour de France winner’s life. In fact, word in Hollywood is that it’s more than just “possible” and that method-actor Jake already has a lock on the role, which is why Gyllenhaal has been spending so much time with Armstrong lately.

Despite that, Jake seems to be playing with his fans, using his success from Brokeback Mountain to get advance publicity and maybe start some very interesting gay 3-way romantic rumors. What’s even more surprising is that his two best pals Armstrong and McConaughey seem to be playing along!

What intensified all the speculation was when Lance Armstrong appeared on stage at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater with his two friends in the audience. On camera at the ESPY awards last month to accept his 4th consecutive "Best Male Athlete" award, he good-naturedly began crudely ribbing Jake, introducing him to the audience as his very good friend and then pausing with a frown to ask Gyllenhaal why he was sitting up front when he thought Jake liked it “in the rear.”

Then he introduced McConaughey as his friend of seven years and pointed out that Matt was the most recent People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Suddenly glancing over at Jake like a jealous lover, Lance sternly reprimanded him by pointing at himself and warning Gyllenhaal that his eyes belonged only on Armstrong! Click the link above to watch a clip of the actual interplay.

As a result, sports betting websites like Bodog began laying 3 to 1 odds that Gyllenhaal’s next paparazzi captured kiss would be with Armstrong. Gyllenhaal and McConaughey got 2 to 1 odds. On the other hand, a smooch between Jake and on-again off-again girlfriend Natalie Portman only got 1 in 3!

Following his split with Sheryl Crow, Lance has reportedly been seen spending more and more time living with and at long-time friend Matthew McConaughey’s rented Malibu beach house when he’s in L.A. The resulting telephotos of them together are guaranteed to boil the hormones of female fans — and more than a few men’s as well!

Whether by intention or design rumors began flying about a romance between the three spandex clad hunks, often seen biking together in the hills around Malibu or partying at local bars, even shopping together. Speculation grew even more intense when Armstrong took Gyllenhaal to France with him. They were photographed with each other constantly at Paris’ posh Crillon Hotel, and Lance even arranged for Jake to ride in the Discovery team car with him during the Tour’s time trials. Jake even joked of changing TV channels on Lance, while watching the Tour to catch Tiger Woods win the British Open.

To set the record “straight,” Jake has always been an intense cycling fan. Lance took to the idea immediately when his close friend and an Oscar nominee proposed playing his part in a movie based on Armstrong’s book It’s Not About The Bike.

Jake has been spending an intense amount of time with Lance, trying to learn everything he can about the sports hero. Gyllenhaal is determined to do justice to the cancer survivor’s life story.

The only cloud on the horizon is that apparently Americans don’t seem to be caught up in cycling enough to lay down $20 for a box of popcorn to see the movie.

Of course I could be wrong.

  • Thanks Matt!!!!!!!

  • Mr. Sussman, I just noticed the link to the betting site you added. Much appreciated sir!

Carus deus, quis have ego commissio?

  • I’ll definitely pay $20 to see that 😉

  • Since I read a lot of sports news, I had never heard these rumors before, and it was just a matter of fact-checking. I figured others would have the same problemo.

Lance didn’t divorce either of his wives because he was gay, it was because — to steal a line from Bill Scheft — he kept finishing 7 minutes ahead of them.

    Romanes Eunt Domus

  • Chantal!!! Get you mind out of the gutter damn it, there isn’t room bot BOTH of us!

  • Matt #5-Thanks I guess that’s why they pay you the big bucks. I absolutely recommend checking out the link to the ESPY awards

You have to know he nervously rehearsed that a zillion times, but it looks like he was joking off the top of his head.

Too bad he can’t play himself in the latter part of the movie!

    7 minutes huh?

Carus deus, quis have ego commissio?

  • Chris, out of curisity, is there a set time or reason the comments section suddenly disappears?

  • Sorry, Jet, I don’t understand you; the comments are always there… except when nobody’s reading them, of course!

  • At the moment I’m typing this, there are only 7 on the screen the bottom is blank, is it my computer?

  • The best part of those ESPY Awards was the Will Ferrell song about Lance Armstrong.

It wasn’t the skit so much that made my night, it was the fact that the moment after Ferrell made a Paris Hilton joke, they panned to Matt Leinart in the audience.

I know it’s on YouTube somewhere. But that was priceless — even more so because it’s a recorded episode.

  • It might be a memory thing, Jet – do you have a lot of windows open?

  • I had my living room window open for a while, but it got to hot so I closed it Chris.

  • Clavos

Jet, Every now and then, when I switch from one BC thread to another, not all the comments show until I refresh the new thread a second time. I’m running Firefox and sometimes have as many as 12 or 13 BC threads open in tabs–that’s when it usually happens.

BTW, Lance Armstrong is one of my modern (as opposed to historical) heroes. I hope the accusations about drugs prove to be BS.

  • Mr. Sussman-here is your link and thanks again…

  • Clavos #13 I thought they had been already?

Carus deus, quis have ego commissio?

  • duane

How do you say “Good grief” in Latin?

  • Clavos

Maybe I’m confused (it wouldn’t be unprecedented!), but I thought a new round had started in the last few weeks?

  • Duane #16 Good=bonus…..grief=moeror

  • Clavos#17 On Lance?

  • Clavos

That’s what I thought, but maybe I’m confusing it with the Landis thing.

  • Clavos, Landis was required to give two samples, which I assumed were given at the same time labeled A and B. They’re working on the B sample now.

What puzzles me is that that doping stuff isn’t exactly what you’d call fast-acting and you’d think it’d have shown up in his samples before this, or still be in his system now….

  • Clavos

I think that, at least in the case of Armstrong, the French gunned for him because it pissed them off that he won the Tour so many times, non?

  • For heaven’s sake Clavos, how can you be pissed at the French for being…….French?

  • Clavos

  • Clavos, why would you think quoting Miss Piggy would help you at a time like this???

  • Clavos

Because I don’t know the words to “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” Jet?

  • You know, somehow I suspected that…

  • It’s widely speculated here in Austin that Matthew McConaughey is gay, but Lance Armstrong who’s also an Austinite is generally believed to be straight. As for Gyllenhall, who the hell of either gender would want to have sex with him unless it ended terminally. He’s one seriously irritating dude.

  • Daaaaave, the rumors were started by the three of them as a publicity stunt to promote the movie! No one actually believe’s Lance is gay, though there are those of us who do fantasize (especially after seeing that photo of him and Matthew).

As for Jake GyllenHaal, different strokes for different folks…

    …maybe I should rephrase that…

  • The rumors of Matthew go waaay back before anyone even thought of this movie.

  • Okay, someone’s not paying attention here, and it might be me. Matthew isn’t in the planned movie, he’s just shacking up with “Straight” Lance Armstrong and biking around in tight spandex with Jake and Lance.

I’ve always thought Matt was gay-he’s waaaaay to pretty to be straight, after all it was a toss up as to who was the beard between Jodie Foster and Matt during “Contact”

Lance may be straight, but many of us wish he wasn’t, and who knows walking around dressed like that in Matthew’s beach house….

  • Matt does smoke a prodigious amount of weed, that at least is a given.

  • Maybe he got Lanc stoned and took advantage, that’s explain all the shopping trips to the market.

  • “It’s widely speculated here in Austin that Matthew McConaughey is gay”

    Well how gay of them!

  • gay or not, that picture of Lance and Matt is HOT!

  • ME

Sorry but I don’t think Jake is playing with his fanbase with stupid rumors. To place all the extra gossip on Jake is unfair and immature. Jake didn’t write the ESPY jokes and he didn’t say them either, Lance did. Lance and Matt are staying at the same beach house. And I am sure Lance and Matt have their own PR and reasons for doing all this, so it isn’t all Jake.

Dave, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think Jake is great and a very talented actor.

  • Chantal, you don’t have to tell me! I tried to blow it up to use as part of my wallpaper collage, but it was done obviously with a telephoto lense and that’s why the image is so small. Right now I’m using the BlogCritic’s Blimp as my wall paper-alas

Carus deus, quis have ego commissio?

  • Me# it’s to promote a movie, as for whether or not Lance and Matt are playing along, look again at the movie clip!

    Yes Jake is definately hot.

Don’t get hot under the collar, it’s just three good friends having a lot of fun.

    boys will be boys

Carus deus, quis have ego commissio?

  • Me#36 you make it sound like Gyllenhaal was being persecuted or something? it was just three friends having fun!

  • Dave 32 I wish he’s share some with my about now…

  • Just how short IS the attention span on this website?

  • So… Foreign testosterone was found in Landis… I hope it wasn’t Gyllenhaal’s… or Lance’s.

  • Wow, that wasn’t even “5-seconds of fame” how soon everyone gets bored!

  • Just ignore me, I’m just trying to get attention… and not succeeding.

  • ltnbrn

Who cares if these 3 are gay or not? It’s highly unlikely that those who hope they are would ever get close enough to find out anyway! The same is true for those who hope they’re straight. It’s kind of sad that you all have spent time speculating about this.

  • #45-Duh! this is an article about a publicity stunt concerning an upcoming movie-not whether the subjects are straight or not?

Are you commenting on the article or the comments on the article?

  • This is about the casting of a movie about Lance Armstrong-not the principle’s sexuality-Sheesh!!!

  • the Queen

Whoever “Dave” is on here. . .you must have spent the last several years in a cave if you can’t imagine anyone who’d want to have sex with Jake Gyllenhaal because I assure there are thousands of women out there who do! I’ll bet there are lots more women craving his body than yours–you must be jealous.

  • Uh Queen, all viewpoints are welcome here. One man’s 10 is another man’s 2 dearie!

  • Well, I gotta admit the “do you love yourself” bullshit is better than “I’ve got nothing to do today, I’m so bored crap”

  • Here’s another one of my recent ones you might like SteveS…enjoy, Jet

  • I’m beginning to wonder-Lance & Matt are featured together in this week’s NEWSWEEK at a Miami hot-spot wearing matching outfits? from all reports they’re still living together at Matt’s malibu beach house too??????

  • Actually if you check out the photo on this article they don’t make a bad looking couple!

  • erdcvsvcsf

    lance is wit jake gylenhal

  • Well erdcvsvcsf, it was certainly sweet and very enlightening of you to share that thought…

…but of course that’s only my opinion

  • bowler in VB

Forgive me if I missed something over the last half a year or so, but did Armstrong come out of the closet? Last I remember, he was dating Crow. Someone please shed some light for me! Thanks

  • Bowler, as much as I appreciate you reading and dropping a line, did you read the article?

    It says…

Despite that, Jake seems to be playing with his fans, using his success from Brokeback Mountain to get advance publicity and maybe start some very interesting gay 3-way romantic rumors. What’s even more surprising is that his two best pals Armstrong and McConaughey seem to be playing along!

    I only wish he’d come out of the closet…he’s a babe…

  • Gyllenhaal told the audience that he wanted to do something to thank fans of his movie “Brokeback Mountain.” So he put on a black wig, ripped off his clothes to reveal a long, spangled black dress and sang Effie’s big song from “Dreamgirls,” “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going.”

Gyllenhaal really got into it, singing in a falsetto and showing off his biceps in his sleeveless gown.

The audience went nuts, including the two cast members dressed as cowboys.

  • If you are talking about the incodent with Matt, I wonder the same thing myself. There are many rumors.

Thanks for dropping a line here

  • Jet

Lance Armstrong is ready to swear climb back on the bike and win an eighth Tour de France. Three years after retiring, the 36-year-old says he’ll return to competition and the Tour de France in 2009, giving up relaxed days of a few beers and Tex-Mex food for a self-described monk’s life of disciplined training and punishing races.

In a formal statement Armstrong called his comeback an attempt to raise global awareness in his fight against cancer. Just as likely, it’s also about his relentless desire to compete and win, especially at the Tour, the race he dominated with a record seven titles from 1999-2005.

    AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —

  • Okay it’s either the famous nude photo of Lance on a bike on my own blog with new photos that’s leading people here to this 4-year-old article at BC or it’s the latest controversy over him being accused of doping. I’m not sure which, but welcome all to all my new mystery google search readers both here and at my site!?!

    A combined 40 just today!

  • …The Amaury Sport Organization, which runs the Tour, told The Associated Press that it would not comment until it had heard more from the International Cycling Union and USADA.

In walking away, the 40-year-old Armstrong cited a familiar defense: he has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. “I know who won those seven Tours,” Armstrong said in his statement. “The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that. Especially Travis Tygart.”

Armstrong previously was the subject of a federal investigation into whether he committed fraud while on the U.S. Postal Service team, not whether he doped. That investigation was stopped earlier this year with no charges filed. USADA then brought its own non-criminal case against Armstrong, citing its authority to protect the integrity of sports as authorized by Congress.

    Earlier Friday, Nike supported Armstrong.

“Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position,” the company said in a statement. “Nike plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation that Lance created to serve cancer survivors.”

Team manager Johan Bruyneel, who led Armstrong to all seven tour titles and also faces doping sanctions, posted a statement on his website: “Today, I’m disappointed for Lance and for cycling in general that things have reached a stage where Lance feels that he has had enough and is no longer willing to participate in USADA’s campaign against him. Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been.

“I hope that it will soon be determined that the case that USADA initiated against me should never have gotten as far as it has. Due to the sensitive nature of legal proceedings, I have been advised that it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this stage.”

  • Lance nude on his bike can be found by clicking here Matthew also “lets it all hang out”

  • I should explain to my nearly hundred readers a day recently that this was written in 2006 and the links are down by now-for some really (ahem) revealing photos, go to my blog by clicking here

  • am curious if Lance the cheating bully (or is that bullying cheater?) still Clavos’ hero?

  • You mean like rats leaving a sinking ship?

I believe Lance when he claims he was only trying to level the playing field when he found that most of his major competitors were doping too.

That doesn’t excuse his actions, but it does go toward motivation.

    I still support him.

  • Since 3AM this morning this article pulled in 89 BC readers… it’s twin on my blog pulled in 179!
