Just How Deep Does Deep Throat Go?

According to sources at Vanity Fair, the 30+ year mystery of Deep Throat, the secret source that leaked information to the Washington Post regarding Nixon’s Watergate Scandal, has been solved.

W. Mark Felt, age 91, has confessed in a Vanity Fair article that he is “the guy they call Deep Throat.”

Felt was second-in-command at the FBI during the time of the scandal, and for the past three decades has fiercely kept the secret from even his family. In 2002, he came out to his family, and in this article, to the nation and the world.

One thing: how do we know we’ve got the right guy?

Barring the fact that I wasn’t even alive in 1974, I could say I was Deep Throat. Anyone could, really. What’s to say Felt really was Deep Throat? What does he have to gain — or lose — from this divulgence?

This would be an open and closed case with ensuing publicity tour if Woodward and Bernstein, the Post reporters who broke the story and know the identity of Deep Throat, would nod along and agree with Felt, “Yes, Felt was the leak known as Deep Throat.”

However, they aren’t. Rather, Woodward and Bernstein are remaining mum on the subject, and have publicly stated that they would continue to protect the identity of Deep Throat until he dies.

So the question remains, is W. Mark Felt Deep Throat? I’m not so sure. What’s in it for him? If he is Deep Throat, why are the Post reporters staying mum? What do they have to lose in revealing Deep Throat’s identity?

As an American citizen, I want to believe that the mystery has finally been solved and that the legendary Deep Throat now has a white, weathered face.

As a journalist, however, I will continue to remain skeptical until Woodward and Bernstein release a public statement declaring Deep Throat’s identity.

A good newspaper should have the knowhow to register a domain name and put their stuff online, that way they don’t have to wait for the next issue to break a story. And the Post has one of the most acclaimed newspaper Web sites.

Yes, I know – and agree completely. But I wasn’t sure whether they would want this historical moment in their print version (and the resulting newspaper rack sales).

Sussman as always comes to my rescue and reiterates my point. My hero … :)

Anyway, the Post proved me wrong, Felt is Deep Throat, and the world of blogging is right again.

In a move that can only be considered to be the blogger’s version of moving in together, we have also started up a joint blog, The Obnoxious Couple, but that’s just getting off the ground.

I wondered how long before someone would make the connection … although I took that particular picture off my blog because I’m trying to rotate back to my political science interest (and college minor).

I heard somewhere that the family wants to rush the book to press before he dies in order to beat out the W/B book that is already written and ready to go to print. Sounds reasonable to me.
