Josh Hamilton is a professional baseball player. Since 2008, he has played for the American League team the Texas Rangers. He was a very hot prospect as a young player, and was the number one draft pick in 1999. But Hamilton developed substantial problems with illegal drugs and alcohol after a 2001 car accident in which he was injured. After several years of struggling in the minor leagues and positive drug tests, Hamilton left baseball altogether. Fortunately, Hamilton was able to kick his drug habit and rehabilitate himself and is now one of the best players in baseball.
Hamilton had a particularly strong season in 2010 and was named the American League MVP (most valuable player). That same year, the Rangers lost in the World Series to the San Francisco Giants.
On July 7, 2011, Hamilton, who plays outfield, tossed a foul ball into the stands toward a young fan. The father of the little boy, Texas firefighter Shannon Stone, while attempting to catch the ball, fell over the railing and landed twenty feet below onto concrete. Stone later died from his injuries.
