As of April 22, 2014, Legacy Records has released Joe Satriani’s Complete Studio Recordings as a box set. This box set contains all 14 of Satriani’s albums, starting with 1986’s Not of this Earth and ending with last year’s Unstoppable Momentum. Two of the albums included were platinum sellers: 1987’s Surfing with the Alien and 1989’s Flying in a Blue Dream. A 15th CD is also included, Additional Creations and Bonus Tracks.

satrianiThe collection also includes a booklet of photos, according to the press release, and each CD has its own replica cardboard jacket. The sound remastering was overseen by Satriani himself, according to the information I received.

I also  received a promotional sampler in streaming audio format consisting of a number of tracks from the release, including “Surfing with the Alien,” “Flying in a Blue Dream,” “Not of This Earth” and “Always with Me, Always with You.” Based on these tracks I would say that the sound quality on the collection appears to be excellent and that even Satriani’s earliest work seems preternaturally modern.

Satriani is, of course, considered to be one of the greatest guitar players of our day and, again according to the press release, the world’s best-selling instrumental guitarist. His career has remained strong and his reputation has endured for nearly 30 years.

Satriani’s music often sounds otherworldly and runs the gamut from sedate and meditative to mind-bending speed. It is, to my mind at least, unlike any other artist’s output. He combines jazz, rock, blues and classical music to create something that is immediately recognizable as Satriani’s own music.

The collection, of course, will be a must for Satriani fans and collectors of instrumental guitar music. It will make an excellent gift for any music lover or for yourself.

Here is the listing of all the albums included in the set:

A fantastic overview of a career that exists purely on the basis that hoards and hoards of guitar enthusiast confuse speed, complexity and quantity with musicality, content and quality.
A lifetime of self indulging fret-wankery on top of generic and cliche chord progressions seasoned with a generous helping of meaningless new-age bullshit titles.
As an unnecessary drain of natural resources in polycarbonate and that ridiculous box-set figurine Satriani does not only pollute the air with his flaccid randomness, but also manages to pollute the earth and sea with this idiotic egomaniac ode to himself.
There should exist institutions that rehabilitate people who actually buy into this elevator music scam.
