Joe Lieberman: To Hell with the American People

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has announced that if the Senate includes a public option in the healthcare reform bill, he’s prepared to side with the Republicans in a filibuster to prevent the bill from coming up for a vote. In other words, he’s prepared to fight to block the will of the American people.

This is the same Joe Lieberman that Democrats sweated blood and treasure to support in his bid for vice president in the 2000 election; the same Joe Lieberman who signed a pledge with seven Republicans and six other Democrats not to filibuster any of Bush’s judicial nominations in 2005; and the very same Joe Lieberman whose own Connecticut constituents polled 21 to 68% (a 47% margin) in favor of a public option. But he doesn’t care about all of that. All he cares about is protecting his cash cow — the insurance industry.

It should disgust this man to even look at himself in the mirror. But obviously he has more greed than shame. Thus, while a Senator cannot be recalled, the people of Connecticut should add a scarlet letter to his name by passing a resolution renouncing him, apologizing to the American people, and demanding that he resign. And in the meantime, the Democrats should strip him of all seniority and banish him from their caucus, because this man lacks the honor of Benedict Arnold.

Let us take a moment to place Lieberman’s treachery in perspective. Think of healthcare like buying gas. Let’s say we have two gas stations right across the street from one another. At gas station one, RepubliGas, where the average citizen is forced to buy gas, the gas is six dollars a gallon. And not only is the gas high, but we’re forced to pay the cashier before we pump. Then after we pay, if we find that there is no gas in the pump, when we go back to the cashier to get our money back, he simply points to a sign that says, “ALL SALES ARE FINAL. PURCHASE AT YOUR OWN RISK. That would be fine if we had other options, but the problem with that is RepubliGas is the only gas station that we’re allow to buy gas.

Then right across the street is DemoGas. At DemoGas the gas is only two dollars a gallon. And not only that, you’re guaranteed that you get the gas you pay for. But there’s only one problem. DemoGas is only allowed to sell gas to the elderly, federal employees, and members of congress. So President Obama decides that’s not fair. He feels that all of the people should be treated equally, so he writes legislation to that effect. But then, Joe Lieberman and his cohorts in congress, who are being generously paid by RepubliGas, come together and indulge in all manner of political obstructionism to prevent the senate from being allowed to even vote on the matter.

Then even though the American people are shouting that it’s not fair, and complain that they can’t get to work, and their children can’t get to school, these so-called representatives of the people completely ignore them. After all, they’re comfortable in their lives, they’re getting cheap gas, and they’re being paid well by RepubliGas just to maintain the status quo. So in short, they say, “To hell with the American people. Let them eat cake.”

That’s exactly what’s happening with healthcare reform. So this is about more than just healthcare — it’s about a system that has completely broken down. This is about a congress that we’ve spoiled, and allowed to give themselves so many perks and raises that they can no longer identify with the very people they’re suppose to be representing. They’ve become a class within themselves, and have started thinking of themselves as royalty. They’ve become a group that Marie Antoinette would envy, and the very thing that our founding fathers fought hardest against.

Many of these people claim that they’re worried about the cost of healthcare, and they’re concerned about leaving a debt on our children. But they lie. They didn’t give a damn about our children when earlier this year they voted themselves a $93,000 increase in (get this) “petty cash” – each. Then a month later they gave themselves an additional $4,700 raise. And they did all this while their constituents were suffering, losing homes and jobs, and the country was in the midst of the deepest recession since the great depression. But now, they’re willing to move Heaven and Earth to avoid giving the people who elected them affordable healthcare.

So again, this is about much more than just healthcare. This is about maintaining the integrity of the United States as a nation “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” If we let these people get away with thumbing their nose at us after the American people have made it clear that we want robust healthcare reform, we will render ourselves completely meaningless.

During the last century, big business and the American people were a partnership. The business community hired us to manufacture their goods, and paid us a living wage that was sufficient to purchase those things that we manufactured. It was a symbiotic relationship. They paid us well, and guaranteed us jobs for life, which gave us the confidence to borrow from the banks and purchased what they produced. It was perfect.

But now, in this new world economy where big business is selling their goods all over the world, and competing with countries who are paying their workers pennies a day, the American worker is no longer looked upon an asset, but more of a liability. Those same American businesses who once relied on the American worker are now international in scope. So they now look upon the American worker, with our relatively high wages, as an extravagance that they can do without. While they still want to sell us their goods, they no longer want to pay us to produce those goods.

That left small businesses to step in and fill the vacuum left by the large corporations. But the insurance industry, who became comfortable with the deep pockets of the large corporations, refuse to adjust to the new reality. That’s why it’s essential that we have a public option to bring stability to skyrocketing heathcare costs under control. It’s the only way that small businesses, and thus, our economy, can survive.

One of the things that prevents small and medium size businesses from hiring more workers is not the wages, but their inability to satisfy the insatiable greed of the healthcare industry. Walmart, one of the largest corporations in the world, has been struggling with the healthcare issue for years, and has been highly criticized for their refusal to provide affordable healthcare for their employees.

Ceci Connolly pointed out in the Washington Post that “Though proud of what it sees as dramatic progress, Wal-Mart itself warns that in a global market with a weakened economy, it cannot — or will not be able to — accept annual healthcare increases of about 8 percent indefinitely.” Thus, if Walmart is having a problem with the cost of healthcare, just imagine what it’s doing to the bottom line of small businesses.

Yet, these fat cat politicians are content to sit back and watch America suffer in order to feather their own nests – and very well. Because the insurance industry is willing to pay these Republicans and Liebercrats huge sums of money to prevent the government from reining in the industry’s greed. And even though these politicians know full well that the greed of the insurance industry is a drag on our economy and costing the American people jobs, lives, and personal hardships, this group of prima donnas have decided to place their own interests before the welfare of the American people.

But a new twist has been added this time. This is the first time that a politician has been as blatant in his treachery as Joe Lieberman. In a very real sense, he has all but literally told 47% of his own constituents to go straight to Hell. And the reason he thinks that he can get away with it is because Bush and Cheney proved for eight solid years that the American people are so disengaged that politicians can get away with anything.

So if the American people ever expect to return to the standard of living that we’ve come to expect, we’re going to have to undo that precedent here and now. It is incumbent upon us to network, and begin to replace every politician that gives any indication that he or she is trying to ignore the will of the people – and we should start that process with the high profile and extremely deserving Joe Lieberman in order to magnify our intent. that will send a strong message to all future politicians, no matter who they are or how charming they seem to be, that in this country, it’s the people who are running things.

On the other hand, the consequences of our failure to act on this matter will be both chilling and unavoidable. The fact is, if we fail to mount a forceful response to the treachery of Joe Lieberman and his cohorts, we will establish a precedent that will ultimately lead to Americans becoming the first new peasants of the new world order.

You’ve got a point that politicians should be responsive to their constituents, but it’s entirely possible that Lieberman believes his constituents want to have a free market healthcare system which preserves choice and doesn’t rape them with mandates and explosively higher taxes. Maybe he thinks this is why we have a representative Republic rather than a direct democracy — so that we can have representatives who research issues and can make a better informed decision than the average citizen and safeguard their interests.

The Republicans do seem to be listening to their constituents. They are more solid than ever against a public option, because they can hear the voters who put them in office screaming for an end for this insane bailout for the insurance companies and tort lawyers masquerading as reform.

“Yet, these fat cat politicians are content to sit back and watch America suffer …”

I thought that was the point. After all, what fun is it to be rich without poor people you can sneer at and scorn and snub.

    Dave, you said:

I don’t see how that’s possible since the polls indicate that the American people are overwhelmingly in favor of a public option as part of healthcare reform, and Lieberman’s constituents are in favor of a public option by 21 to 68% – a 47% margin.

If the Senate moves on this bill on a Friday night it would be a moot point. Lieberman would then have to choose between his Orthodoxy and governance.

The citizens of Connecticut can make things right in the next two elections. Lieberman may be commended for his adherence to his own point of view and the voters have a right to approve or reject him. In looking at both Senators, I hope that the voters send Dodd home first. This man is representative of old Washington politics and as such should be voted out of office.

  • http://ruvysroost.blogspot.com Ruvy

    Silas,

Joe Lieberman puts his politics first and G-d somewhere later.

If the Senate moves this bill on a Friday night, you can be sure that Lieberman will be there to oppose it.

I don’t have any use for the hypocrite. No Jew who says he is “Orthodox”, who has had relatives killed by Arab terrorists like Lieberman has, would ever support an Arab terror state in Judea and Samaria or the expulsion of fellow Jews from their homes. Lieberman supports both. His stands on American politics are irrelevant to me. He is just another stupid, opinionated American Jew who thinks that because he got his pecker trimmed in a brit milá, he knows what is good for Israel.

Dave, you can take good ole Joe home with you as a pet.

Lieberman is a mealy mouthed turd of the first order. He should be stripped of all seniority and his committee chairmanships. He has no place in the Dem party. Let him live the remainder of his congressional life as a true Independent – alone on “Turncoat” island.

What’s funny is that the Reps don’t particularly like him either. Some have said that few on either side of the aisle care for him personally. He should be considered a pariah to all.

    Mark,

That comment can be taken a lot of ways, and all of them are off the mark. There many people who support Israel who are just as outraged as anyone else with Lieberman’s treachery. And besides that, Israel has enough to deal with without the likes of Traitor Joe.

Joe Lieberman’s Treachery is the human result of the way we conduct our political business in the United States. It’s the direct result of one our biggest systemic shortcomings.

  • Baronius

Next time you hear conservatives complaining about McCain, think of your feelings toward Lieberman. We don’t like him, we don’t trust him, and we’re still angry about having to (sort of) support him at the top of the ticket.

  • Glenn Contrarian

    Ruvy –

I like your point about Joe on a Friday night. One who would claim to be strong in his faith must follow through with actions, not just words.

  • zingzing

dave: “Thankfully we don’t live in a country run by polls.”

that’s true, but it does pretty much show your point to be wrong. well, i guess it still is a possibility, technically, but it’s pretty doubtful.

  • http://ruvysroost.blogspot.com Ruvy

Glenn, it’s just basic. I know you disagree with an awful lot of things I write, but what you do not comprehend is how much of that is predicated on my faith as a believing Jew and Child of Israel.

The only American Jewish politician I can appreciate at all is a fellow named Dov Hikind, an Assemblyman in the NY State Legislature from Brooklyn. He’s probably a Democrat (I’m honestly not sure and too lazy to look it up), but when it comes to Jewish issues and Israel, he says and DOES all the right things. That’s rare among Democratic politicians these days. Most of them are either anti-Israel, lying hypocrites like Joe Lieberman, or fools deluding themselves about reality.

For someone to take Lieberman’s comments and say–To Hell with the American People is a little harsh!

Let’s all look at the facts again! When your on live TV (at least in a free world)and right now AMERICA IS A FREE WORLD you can make your decision!

This is what I have heard—60 Minutes 9-13
Obama–if you have a physician you like and an insurance provider you like–YOU DON’T HAVE TO CHANGE!

Obama doesn’t stop there–he says—WE “THE GOVT” will make sure of the stability and the security of your plan! In order for that to happen, Obama would have to find out your insurance provider–he will know your plan–whether it is through a group or private provider–and your premium amounts to your insurance company! The Govt will be the Watchdog of your insurance provider–if they think your insurance provider is working with this Administration by keeping the cost of health care down–your insurance company will be shut down!

Meaning–The Govt will not only have that information, but will have your medical records–he will know your diagnosis–prognosis–and your medications. How else could Obama make sure your insurance provider is in compliance with your plan?

On 60 minutes Obama was asked how he intended to cut the cost of medical care—
Obama said: from waste and abuse–the money that is already being spent that is not making people healthier–take that money can go to provide a better deal without insurance!
Picking and choosing–when does this happen in America?

Then Obama said: “Once the health care reform has passed–I WILL OWN IT! If there is a dispute between the American people and their care, I WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY!
On 09-20-09 on ABC with George Stephanouls who asked Obama about tax and fine for those who can’t afford to pay the premiums–
Obama said: everyone can afford the premiums–well, if they don’t know the precise bill–and if they don’t know the total cost of the bill–how can they say this–You can’t guarantee unless you know the exact cost of the bill–not review it year by year (or a piece meal type insurance)and then we have no guarantee when the premiums will begin slow–then be out of sight in 10 years.

I think the American people need to be assured there premiums will be consistent for the next 10 years!

I also have wondered health care–does this include–dental–vision–life insurance–or will the American people have to pay more and more for these services—There are a lot of unanswered questions.

When you think only 1/6th of the deficit is due to health care costs, the real shame is instead of our Government assisting the 50 million people who do not have insurance today–but feel they have to write the entire health care reform. Instead of taking monies that are being sent overseas such as:—Billions to Brazil to drill off shore which Obama has approved—ABORTION AROUND THE WORLD–not just in AMERICA–There are ways this Administration could put America first–keep monies in America until every American is taken care of first–Every Single American then wouldn’t have to worry about a Government CONTROL OF OUR HEALTH CARE! When Obama on 60 minutes said: “once the health care reform is passed–I WILL OWN IT”! Looking at it as a POSSESSION! That to me was scary and caused me to worry!

How compassionate is our Govt–well when our President jumps on Air Force One flys to New York–looks at a Black Blind Mayor and tells him not to run again for Governor of New York–Well, that is frightening. This blind man has worked harder–learning was more difficult–people making fun of him–and then gets into a position to be the Governor–just to have a PRESIDENT SAY NO–DON’T RUN AGAIN! That doesn’t sound right to me!

When Gibbs gets on television and says, cable television should not be allowed to be showing these town hall meetings and then we hear the FCC has been called in by the White House to try and get them off the air–THEN WE HAVE STATE CONTROLLED TELEVISION JUST LIKE RUSSIA–CHINA–ANY SOCIALISTIC GOVERNMENT!

When the Govt is afraid what they are trying to sell the American people can’t stand by itself—and they don’t think the American people can make their own decisions on this Administration policies—

THEN THEY NEED TO ASK THEMSELVES HOW DID THEY GET TO DC?

The Constitution has withstood the test of time–233 years old. Through wars–through depressions–you can say–“these truths are self evident–this document still stands!

Joe Lieberman is a man with a conscience! Whether you believe in Allah–or God—one day you will stand before them and give account on how they voted in Congress! To him much is given, MUCH WILL BE REQUIRED–YOU WILL BE MORE ACCOUNTABLE FOR BEING LEADERS OF A GREAT NATION!

I am a Republican–I have never voted completed Republican–I vote for the Character of man whom I feel will lead our country and keep it in VICTORY LANE!

    I STILL SAY–GOD BLESS AMERICA!

  • http://delibernation.com/blog/3 Silas Kain

For someone to take Lieberman’s comments and say–To Hell with the American People is a little harsh!

Harsh? You have got to be kidding. He’s a turncoat. He used the Democrat Party to advance himself and when it was apparent that McCain would have made history by naming him the Veep candidate, Lieberman was all too willing to sell his political soul. The problem that McCain and Jumpin’ Joe never saw coming was that the fringe right of the GOP has complete dominance and without them, no Republican is safe.

It doesn’t really matter because in the end neither Party has the wherewithal to step up to the plate and do the right thing. They’re so gripped in fear and seduced by the culture which permeates Washington that they will stop at nothing to advance their individual goals. They’re not representing us, folks, and we’re too damned stupid to realize it.

  • http://wattree.blogspot.com Wattree

    Sharon,

I’ve been reading comments on the internet for close to 25 years, and in all that time I have never seen a comment with so many inaccuracies, non sequiturs, false conclusions as you present here.

Based on your analysis of the way things work in the Unided States, you should be against ALL laws, since according to your theory, when the government passed seatbelt laws they intended to dispatch agents to hide in the bushes of every home in America to make sure you put on your seatbelt.

But Of course, that’s typical wing-nut nonsense, and pardon me, but it takes the consummate fool to believe such crap.

The president simply means that he intends to pass the necessary laws to protect the American citizen from predatory insurance companies, but without inconveniencing the people in the process. Period.

  • http://thingsalongtheway.blogspot.com/ Cindy

Hope your arm is healing well, Silas. I just want to repeat and add to what you said.

It doesn’t really matter because in the end neither Party has the wherewithal to step up to the plate and do the right thing. They’re so gripped in fear and seduced by the culture which permeates Washington that they will stop at nothing to advance their individual goals. They’re not representing us, folks, and we’re [taught to accept this and to not] realize it.

Because that is how power is maintained. And it’s really always been this way, since the govt was started. So, go and relook at history minus the myths you’ve been taught. Pay attention this time to some of the other viewpoints that might be harder to find. The ones that don’t support the myths and are therefroe not just handed to you in schools.

#2 – John Wilson makes a good point.

There is enough to go around. We can do better than this.
