The pop kids vs. the cool kids on the iTunes Chart Watch...

iTunes Chart Watch: Vampire Weekend, Ke$ha, & The Return of Train

Is Ke$sha this year’s Lady GaGa.  I hope so, if only so that Lady GaGa can’t be this year’s Lady GaGa.  I heard my first Lady GaGa song this weekend while flipping channels.  I didn’t like this stuff when Madonna did it 20 years ago.  I guess this is music for people who don’t remember the mid-to-late ‘80s.  You can keep that, is what.  The big shocker in this week’s chart is the return of Train with “Hey, Soul Sister.”  Train had some big singles late in the ‘90s and earlier in this decade but seemed to run out of – wait for it – steam.  Not so fast.  They’re back.  They’ve got a new album and a single that seems to have captured the ears of the many.  I’ll confess to liking a couple songs from their self-titled debut but they really lost the plot with that “Drops of Jupiter” thing and I’ve been anti-Train since.

The cool kids got their Vampire Weekend to #1 on the albums chart, and according to our wonderful writer Holly Hughes it’s deserved.  Still haven’t picked this or their debut up, but I’m going to have to find out what the hype is all about.  Sade has been away for 10 years and absence has clearly made the heart grow fonder, as her Soldier of Love CD has entered the Top 10 as has her Best Of.  According BC’s Clayton Perry, Soldier was worth the wait.
