Stacey Voss is the author of the paranormal thriller Thunder and Blood. This is an excellent story of vampires, portals, alternate universes, and fantasy. Be sure to catch my review. For now, sit back, relax and get to know the wonderful author behind Thunder and Blood!
Can you tell us a bit about Thunder and Blood. This is the first in a series, correct? How many books do you see coming out of the series?
S.V.: Thunder and Blood is the first book in a series that will first move forward in the current time line, then backward to further clarify how vampires evolved in the parallel Earth. I think there will be at least five in all, but I’m not entirely certain. I’m sure the characters will let me know when I’m done telling their story.
When is your next book coming out? I have to tell you that the way you ended Thunder and Blood was amazing and the excerpt for the next one made me crazy to read on!
S.V.: I’ve heard that before! I had planned to write the second one during the November 2009 NaNoWriMo, but am tempted to start earlier since I’m getting almost daily requests to finish it sooner. One thing I want to do first though, is re-edit Thunder and Blood and get it ready for a second edition. I’m going to release the second edition of Thunder and Blood at the same time as the first release of Thunder and Ice.
Who are your favorite characters in the story and why?
S.V.: My favorite character is Sarah, because she is very much the woman I was when I first came up with this story idea. I first started writing Thunder and Blood when I was 24 and had just come out of a difficult marriage. My husband didn’t cheat on me (at least I don’t think so), but I suffered from a lot of the same self-confidence issues that Sarah struggles with. I hope that by the time I finish the series I can help her to see herself as she really is, and not just as what other people have told her she was throughout her life.
Can you tell us a bit about your writing process and what writing means to you? Where do you come up with your characters, ideas, etc.?
S.V.: Well, I seem to write best when my subconscious guard is let down; that is, when I’m extremely tired or depressed or… whatever. That fits the NaNoWriMo model really well because you have to write 50,000 words in 30 days (somehow fitting it into everyday life, work, etc.) This year I plan to set a 75,000 word goal so that Thunder and Ice can be a bit more filled out and really explain more of the story. It might actually go on further than that, we’ll see.
When I experience writer’s block I tend to do a sensory deprivation thing where I lay in the bath in the dark and just picture my characters, where they are in the story, what’s happening to them, and let them tell me what happens next. I’ve had some pretty shocking revelations come to me that way and it really lets me get into the heads of my characters a bit more.
What is a “day in the life Stacey” like? Can you share with readers a bit of the person behind the writing?
S.V.: Right now I’ve gotten back to teaching part time – I teach business and computers at a local career college. Every morning I get up, hit the computer with a cup of coffee and blog, tweet, or look at different ways to market my book. I know that people want to hear that I’m tirelessly working on the second book, but I haven’t reached a point yet where that story is ready to come out. I try to do a bit of some kind of writing every day though. In the afternoons I teach and in the evenings I spend time with my family.
What types of books do you like to read and who are some of your favorite authors?
S.V.: I like to read fiction. I know that’s not very specific, but I read a wide variety of genres. If I had to name my favorite right now, it would be fantasy, but my favorite genre changes from year to year. I went through periods of loving horror, literary fiction, science fiction, historical fiction, etc. My favorite authors are Dean Koontz, Orson Scott Card, George R.R. Martin, and a variety of others.
Who inspires you?
S.V.: That’s an interesting question. I don’t know that anyone gives me the inspiration for my stories, but I would say that my husband, Heiko, inspires me to keep writing and my daughter inspires me to keep going every day.
Have you always wanted to be a writer? Can you see yourself branching out into other genres?
S.V.: I’ve wanted to be a writer since I first learned how to hold a pencil. When I was really young my biggest dreams were to be a writer and a teacher; I’ve been very lucky to have grown up to be both. As for other genres, anything is possible. I can’t see myself writing much more about vampires after this series is done, so you never know. I have a few other stories in a closet in my mind that I think I might want to develop in the future.
Okay, here are some fun questions:
What are some of your favorite foods?
S.V.: I love pizza, spaghetti, chocolate and ice cream. I lived in Germany for three years and was lucky to have easy access to some of the best chocolate ever!
What do you enjoy doing when you have free time?
S.V.: In the summer, I read and go camping and fishing. In the winter, I read and do crafts. I almost always have some TV on while I’m working at the computer, but it doesn’t really matter what it is, I just like to give my brain a chance to multitask.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
S.V.: In five years I’d love to be able to write full time. My husband and I would like to have another baby (my daughter is 12 now, just the right age for babysitting) so I’d like to have a three or four year old running around the house.
Do you have a favorite movie or TV show right now?
S.V.: My favorite movie is 50 First Dates because Heiko and I watched it as our own “virtual first date” when he was still living in Germany and I was still in Canada. It’s funny and romantic.
