Kasey Crawford Kellem is a school counselor and a former Special Education teacher. She has recently devoted her life to helping children who face adversity to be resilient. Kellem created a series of children’s books titled Mind Over Matter, or M.O.M Books, to help teach preschoolers to be resilient. Kellem believes by starting at a young age we can teach our children the skills to overcome life’s challenges.

“Everyone faces tumultuous times in their lives,” Kellem shared and this couldn’t be more true. Kellem said she grew up in a traditional nuclear family that included her mom, dad and three sisters. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Special Education. She also has an Educational Specialist Degree in counseling. While growing up, Kellem said, “I played a lot of sports and percussion instruments in band. I was pretty much the class clown. I knew then laughter helps people get through some rotten times.”

This Cleveland area counselor hopes her books will teach children they can get through their gut-wrenching, stressful troubles using a Mind Over Matter technique. “It’s within everyone,” stated Kellem. “My goal is to get the M.O.M. Books into the hand of as many children under age six as soon as possible to introduce them to five concepts of resiliency.” The idea to overcome challenges Kellem said is, “One must believe, dream, love, relax and laugh.” Which just happen to be the names of each book in Mind Over Matter book series.

When I asked Kasey Crawford Kellem about the journey to see her books in print she said, “I followed my own resiliency philosophy of  BELIEVING that I will find someone who believes in me! After one publisher declined my book despite a few months of correspondences, I simply put out a Facebook post and one of my former students set me up with his sister’s publishing company. Lisa Umina from Halo Publishing International loved my books and their purpose! She focuses on children’s books, Christian books, and books that help others! My book could have fallen under all three of those categories. I am grateful for social media!”

The first book Believe is already out from Halo Publishing International. Owner Lisa Umina said, “This series is something that will help children throughout their entire lives.” A statement I truly agree with after reading Believe. This first book helps children understand anything is possible if you just believe in yourself. The illustrations by Janet Hill are vivid and whimsical. They tie in with the overall message Kellem shares in her simple by inspiring words.

The Mind Over Matter (M.O.M.) Books are here to help not only children but even us adults who understand life comes at us fast. As parents we need to find ways to help prepare our future generation by giving them the right tools to face the challenges, adversities, and obstacles that inevitable become a part of their lives. Kellem has given us one tool already with her new book series. Kellem also shared, “These books are also designed to be decorations on bookshelves, nightstands, or desks in a child’s bedroom. Or even a playroom. They will serve as a constant resilience reinforcement.”

Not only does Kasey Crawford Kellem’s books offer an important message but it allows the parent and child to interact with each other. Each book will have some kind of interaction hidden within its pages. In Believe, you can search for the caterpillar on each page and talk about what he believes in. Also, have your child share a story based on the inspiration of each illustration. You’ll be amazed at what their imaginations come up with. I sure did with my two girls.

The remaining M.O.M. Love, Laugh, Relax and Dream will be on the market in the next two years. Kasey Crawford Kellem is also available for school and speaking engagements. You can find out more at her website.
