Icons Hospitalized

Soul legend Aretha Franklin and famed British pianist George Shearing are both hospitalized. Aretha:

Aretha Franklin has been hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment and is in stable condition, her publicist said Monday.

The Queen of Soul, who lives in Detroit, was hospitalized Saturday, according to Gwendolyn Quinn, her New York City-based publicist.

Quinn declined to say where the singer had been hospitalized. The publicist said she had no further information about Franklin’s illness or how long she would be hospitalized.

The legendary singer turns 62 on Thursday. Last month, she won a Grammy Award for best traditional R&B vocal performance for “Wonderful” from her latest CD, “So Damn Happy.” [AP]

It is disconcerting that NO information has been given regarding Aretha’s hospitalization – we of course wish her only the best.

George Shearing was hospitalized after a fall last night in his New York home. The 84-year-old jazz master is currently under observation and has had to cancel scheduled performances in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. His new album on Concord, Lullabies of Birdland: A Musical Autobiography, was just released two weeks ago – only the best to him as well.

UPDATE
Aretha had an allergic reaction to antibiotics:

Soul legend Aretha Franklin remains in hospital after having an allergic reaction to antibiotics, the singer’s doctor has said.
She was admitted to Detroit’s Sinai-Grace Hospital after returning from a concert tour on Saturday, Dr Claud Young told television station WXYZ-TV.

He said she had suffered a “rather severe” reaction to antibiotics.

“I am resting comfortably and responding very well,” Franklin said in a statement released by her publicist. [BBC]
