John Brown was born this day in history, May 9, 1800. Screw the evil Abraham Lincoln, ol’ John Brown was the guy who REALLY gave a damn about freeing the slaves.

OK, he was a religious nutcase- but arguably to a good end in this case. God told him to lead an armed revolt to free the slaves. He led the famous assault on Harper’s Ferry, and was heading south with men and munitions when he was caught and hanged for a traitor.

JOHN BROWN’S BODY

John Brown’s body lies a-mouldering in the grave,
John Brown’s body lies a-mouldering in the grave,
But his soul goes marching on.

Chorus:
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
His soul goes marching on.

He’s gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord,
He’s gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord,
His soul goes marching on.

Chorus:

John Brown’s knapsack is strapped upon his back,
John Brown’s knapsack is strapped upon his back,
His soul goes marching on.
Chorus:

John Brown died that the slaves might be free,
John Brown died that the slaves might be free,
His soul goes marching on.
Chorus:

The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down,
The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down,
His soul goes marching on.
Chorus:

And let us conclude this little birthday celebration with a quote from WEB DuBois, “John Brown taught us that the cheapest price to pay for liberty is its cost today.”
