We’ve now had 100 entries in the poll of great guitarists. Since the results were last posted after 63 people had entered their choices, much remains the same, but there have been a few significant changes.

Jimi maintains an insurmountable lead in first place, with Clapton easily in second. Hendrix and Slowhand received the same number of votes (28) since the last results were posted, narrowing Hendrix’s lead in percentage but increasing it in total points. There were two changes in the top ten – Eddie moved past SRV into 4th, and Duane Allman moved up from 11th to 8th, knocking Steve Vai out of the top 10.
George Harrison has vaulted from 18th to 12th. The biggest gainer among the frontrunners is Mark Knopfler, moving up from 23rd to 14th. Malmsteen, Rhoads, and May have also passed Zappa, moving FZ from 15th to 20th. Kirk Hammett passed Chuck Berry to take over 21st.
Jazzmen Django Reinhardt and Al Di Meola each moved up a few notches, but apparently we haven’t had many fans of classical music or the Grateful Dead enter their choices lately. Andres Segovia has received only 2 votes in the last 37 entries, dropping from 19th to 32nd. Jerry Garcia dropped from 26th to 31st.

Here are the current results. To see results at 63 and 100 entries side-by-side, click here.

About Taloran

  • tony mahon

mkay, hate to be the barer of bad news, again, but there are 3 zach wyldes on the list and 2 kirk hammets so theyll have to be merged. also the iron maiden guitarists are mentioned individually and collectively

  • Taloran

Crap…. I didn’t archive a copy of the DB at 100 votes, so it’ll have to stay as is. I’ll try to do some cleanup before the next post, at 150 or so. At least I got rid of all the Steive Ray Vaughns. ;-)

I realize the Iron Maiden, Sonic Youth, Kinks etc. guitarists were listed both individually and in groups, but I’m not correcting those. If that’s the vote someone put in, that’s how it appears. I do correct typos (where I find them) and remove names of bands (Paul Stanley of KISS) but don’t have the time, energy or desire to do much more cleanup than that.

  • Taloran

It’s interesting that we have at least one bass player (Jack Casady) and two ukulele players (Tiny Tim, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole) on the list. I looked at the current list last night, and someone has added Paul Butterfield (a harp player.)

Django has two entries as well.

  • tripper222

Bela Fleck is also in there, he is a banjo type player. I also cant beleive that there are still people that voted for jonny ramone, I mean what are you thinking. The jack white thing is also a little out there, he uses nothing but power chords, and to my knowledge I remember one solo in that seven nation army song, and thats about it. But I am happey to see tim reynolds on that list, hes really something

  • ArtBarton

These rankings so far are indicative of people who actually listen to music, thus a far superior list than what Rolling Stone came up with. Virtually no guitarist featured in your top 100 is just trendy. Rolling Stone had at least 10 of those. Good job Bloggers.

  • stephen

should i get a beginer electric guitar or a regular one

  • Antfreeze

Stephen, I’m not much of a player but I know those cheap guitars end up being sold at garage sales for five bucks, whereas a “real” guitar will hold it’s value and be worth something when you’re ready to sell it. Also chintzy guitars make you sound even worse than you really are, making most people give up. Good guitars make you sound better and are easier to play and maintain.

  • Anthony G

Stephen, if that is your real name dogg,
do not listen to anyone who’s name is Anthrax.

I think you should get a bass instead of an electric guitar so you can play rap tunes. Why would getting an electric.

  • foker

what about george lynch. why is he not on the list

  • Hill

The new up and comer is a guitar player named Jon Krimstock.saw him on tour in europe and also around new york city.He should be on list and will be a name.

why isnt paul gilbert higher and why is rusty cooley not on this ‘poll’-both extremely talented guitarists who have revolutionized rock guitar.
    BUMBLEFOOT?

  • Mike Comstock

John Frusciante should be in the top 5

  • Jett Quinn

JEFF CULLEN WAS #35 IN 2001, #89 IN 2005…WHERE IS HE NOW??? I THINK HE SHOULD BE IN THE TOP 10…HIS SOLO EARGASM IS UNREAL

  • FMDyllio

I’d say that something is seriously wrong when Alvin Lee isnt even in the top 10. Wow, to think of how ignorant this society really is. Alvin Lee was better than the much over-rated Hendrix himself. Here’s my unbiased, honest TOP 25 list.

  • Jason

Steve Vai NUMBER 1!!!!!! GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER!!!!!

  • please be fair

jose feliciano is better than carlos santana, he is just to humble to recognize it, i know they rae not the same style, but , i remember some insane performances solos of jose feliciano that carlos santana will never surpass, my respects to him, but jose feliciano is other thing

  • of course

Of course that jose feliciano is better than carlos santana, but by some miles, please , jose feliciano too fast when young, i remember him when he play the flight of the bumble bee, please no way santana could surpass that.

  • are

Please both are legends, but i think that jose feliciano should be ahead of carlos santana, not by much, but for me he is better, Im very dissapointed he is not in the first 100, he should be in the top 20, please the man is blind and he is a genious with the guitar and a great singer too, but with the guitar i think he is the most underrated on this list by much, maybe you people should go to internet to youtube and make a search of jose feliciano, and see how genious he was with the guitar, he have the most incredible solo I ever seen

  • Jose Luis

hendrix is the best please the man was an innovator, Steve vai was very good also, but Eric clapton I think he is not better than santana, with all respect, and santana is not as good as some other guitar playersm like Jose Feliciano, please be real, that list is not good.

  • Mark

In fact.. I’m agree… that chart is not true
Any guitar lover or true player can’t put Jose Feliciano in that position, for me He’s sure in the top 10 or 20 guitarist in the world
Sure one of the most creative and fast player in many guitar styles,
I see him plays from Malaguena to Purple Haze with electric guitar… incredibile! See him at Youtube.com

  • alexander

jose Feliciano was selected as the greatest living guitar player, i don’t know how he is not in the first ten, and any guitar lover should put him ahead carlos santana, he was blind and too fast, he have some of greatesr solos ever , I dont see how carlos santana is a better guitar player than him.

  • Dean

This list is a joke. There’s not a rock guitarist out there (including Jimi Hendrix) who could seriously be included in the top 100 guitar players of all time. When you consider all the great classical and jazz guitarists, it’s a farce to even mention these rock guitarists in the same survey with virtuosos like Segovia or Joe Pass. Even my ex-guitar teacher Mark Elf plays circles around Eric Clapton.

  • Guitar Dave

    Dean,

I have to agree with your comments but you have to understand that most guitarists are ignorant. Literally ignorant, I don’t mean stupid, they just haven’t been exposed to the music of the world’s greatest guitarists. I will bet most of the people who participated in this survey are under the age of 25 and can’t read music. It’s doubtful any of them could even play an Em7b5 or a Cmaj9. Guitarists in general get a bad rap because of all the hackers out there. Most guitarists are awful musicians, it’s unfortuante but it’s true.

  • ALEXANDER

SEGOVIA AND JOE PASS WITH JOSE FELICIANO SHOULD BE AHEAD OF MOST OF THE FIRST TEN IN THAT LIST.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPA2TiDtuio Jim

    LOL!
Jose Feliciano at nr 316 of the chart???

… How is this guitar chart, a joke for children?

Please put Jose on top10 if You want give credibility at this list

  • juan

    jose feliciano is the best

  • http://978 Troy miller

I don’t know why people ar saying their guitair teachers are better then jimi Hndrix because if he is why the hell didn’t he become huge like Jimi? Anyways blues and Jazz guitarist might have technique but Rock guitarist have speed and i don’t care what anyone says but they are very legit and deseverve respect I personally think that whoever doesn’t reconize their talent just doesn’t like their voices And aren’t real giutar players or they just don’t listen to as much as they say.

  • http://963 david

I agree with Troy rock guitarist have speed and people that trash them just don’t like rock and roll

  • http://963 david

The list for top ten is decent but i personally think Eddie Van Halen is the best

  • http://943 Andrew

Finaly Some people who get it If you don’t like rock guitarist and think their terrible mucsians then you just don’t listen to it and don’t even Know what their playing half the time. if you say crap about rock guitarist like that you just don’t like the music rock and roll like David said and nothing against Blues and Jazz guitar players but you probaly think their the only good genre out their and like to make fun of everything else. and if you say they can’t read music then your’e just saying that rock scares you and think that scary people like that can’t be guitar educated.

  • http://befair juan

Nobody is telling that hendrix is not the best but is a joke to said that carlos santana is better than jose feliciano, you need to see him play some insanes solos, and he could play any style including rock like a master, Im not against the rock guitar players Im against that list who is not a real list.

  • http://921 Chris

Ok But the thing is rock guitar has attitude in it blues and jazz rarely do that’s what drives rock guitar players to make music. Their not just playing standard electric guitar like jazz players their a differnt and better sound their playing crazy hard stuff. So bottom line is if you say rock guitarist aren’t good muscians you just don’t know what your’e talking about.

  • John

Please Jose Feliciano should be in the top ten that is the bottom line

  • http://www.ghostboy.tk Float the Dragon

    Huzzah for Zoot Horn Rollo!

  • MIchael

Jose Feliciano is a legend and he should be in the top 10 of that list, period

  • Pantera_fan

why is Dimebag Darrell number 76??? barely any guitarests could touch that guy he was better than moslty all or all of the top 100 he should be at least in top 10 or 5

  • Mark

I can’t believe it, but clearly only one of you have seen Nick Harper live! You must fix this ASAP…

  • http://www.mygptv.com/9 PAUL LOWE

Here`s the link to my guitar video, just maybe you`ll think I should be on that list.Ha!Ha!
Then again maybe not, I`ll let you be the judge.
My video is the most watched on MY GUITAR PLAYER TV The title of my video (From Dawn`Til Dusk) Everyone please watch my GUITAR VIDEO. THANK-YOU VERY MUCH

  • T-bird

This list is a joke. for a start Kurt cobain would turn in his grave if he knew he was on this list full stop, I do like cobain but guitar playing is not what he was about. secondly he is above Nick Drake, john maclaughlin etc, you put avril lavigne above robben ford, and jon-bon-jovi above these guys aswell? wtf?

  • Vern Halen

Guitar styling are highly individualized, just lke people’s voices. You can have preferences or favorites, or certain voices may be more suitable on certains occasions, but it’s pointless trying to define the best on those criteria. Likewise with guitar. Why don’t we do a favorite guitarists poll? Pick your top three or any three you like and explain why they appeal to you – it’d make a lot more sense.

For me, three at random, rock only: 1) Angus Young – figured out how to get the most out of that placnk of wood known as the SG; 2) Pete Townshend – had a style that was both rhythm & lead at the same time; 3) Jimmy Page – I’m still trying to figure how he played with his instrument hanging down by his knees.

  • MrDoney

Dave Gilmour’s in the list three time, spelt differently! I think the data needs a bit of a cleanup!

  • Rusticalz

What I’m wondering is why Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai are where they are they should be just below hendrix. And Dimebag’s Number 76? He should be in the top ten!

  • johnny sakinikas

I saw Jeff Cullen in the 90’s. I have never seen or heard a better guitar player since. I was at the Roxy in L.A and it was packed…he came out after a break and changed the way i have looked at guitar ever since. I read he had the top ten guitar solos of all time with Eargasm… his 5 minute guitar solo… but i cannot find him in the poll.
He designed his own 30 fret guitar, his own amps and cabs too… he had effects wired into the guitar that make Hendrix and EVH look like jokers. Where is he… anyone know?
He was top 100 guitarists of all time for years… is he in a band?

  • Terry Cowl

JEFF CULLEN… UTUBE HIM. I saw Eargasm and it was in a club. AMAZING. He turned down Ozzy a bunch of times… they tried to get him to replace Zakk Wilde when Zakk and Ozzy had a tif.
The dude is i’d say the best of that genre hands down. My faves are Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen and Jeff Cullen,

pat metheny, pat martino, john scofield, mike stern, jim hall, paco de lucia, and bela fleck (even though he is a banjo player) would wipe the floor with any of those top 10 except satriani and hendrix (whom they would still destroy, just not AS bad). jazz guitarists understand music theory like a rock guitarist could never even hope to, and flamenco guitarists have speed that rock guitarists can’t touch. carlos santana shouldn’t even be in the top 200.

There is a new christian Irish band out called
IONA. They have a guitarist named Dave Bainbridge.
He could beat anybody on the list. ANYBODY. To
prove it rent the video IONA live in London. Enough said.
