google plus logoMalarchy.

Yeah I said it, and you didn’t misread it either.  It’s spelled quite correctly regardless of the squiggly red lines I see below it editing the text.  I don’t mean malarkey as in foolish or insincere.  I mean malarchy, as in something that can only be classified as governed by the bad.  As you all should know by now, unless you live in a spider hole, Google is gearing up their Google+ program, which is their latest try at social networking.  Much like Gmail when it first came out, there was a limited trial that used an invitation system to register new users.  Originally, this article was supposed to be all about Google+, as I had fully readied myself to sign up and give you fine folks some sort of review and maybe some screenshots of what it’s all about.  But I can’t.  I can only guess.  I can only live vicariously through my friends’ experiences and curse Google, with a shaking fist of indignation held high.

I have 3 invitations, but I still can’t log on.  Every time I try I get hit with that same irritating message: “Oops… you need a Google profile to use this feature.  Google Profiles is not available for your organization.”  Since when am I an organization?  Allow me explain, as the definition of “organization” is pretty narrow.  You see kids the thing is this: I have a fair-sized ego.  In the words of Dr. Cox from Scrubs, “this machine runs on props.”  It’s not an ego so big that I would try to trademark a common phrase a la Donald Trump’s “you’re fired,” but big enough that I would (and did) register the domain name tusharnene.com, for no other purpose than to host email addresses from it and run my little blog.  That’s right, mine.  Doing that through Google and enom was stupidly cheap and they give you Google Apps on your domain to boot.  That little detail is what makes me an “organization,” even if I am just an organization of one single damn user.  Google+ requires a Google profile.  And guess who isn’t allowed to make Google profiles?  You guessed it, Google Apps “organizations.”

I figured it wasn’t too big of a problem.  I have other email addresses aside from my Google Apps address.  So let’s try going through those.  “Oops… you need a Google profile to use this feature.  Google Profiles is not available for your organization.”… Well damn.  Just being logged into my Google Apps account means that clicking invitation links from my Yahoo email address still won’t work.  And I can’t do it through my Gmail account, because I can’t be logged into that and my Google Apps account simultaneously.  But in my head I still had outs.  I tried opening the invitation in my Yahoo address on my phone.  Maybe that would do the trick. “Google+ is unavailable for your account.”  … Monkeys.  No dice.  I was signed in under my Google Apps in account on my Droid X as well, which is synced to my email.

Now this doesn’t mean I can’t use Google+ period.  I can always log out of my Apps account and use my old Gmail account.  But I really don’t want to.  My Apps account is open all the time – for email as well as other services like Google chat, Blogger, Feedburner and Google Analytics.   I’d have to use Google+ independently if I wanted to see it at all, that is to say I have to be logged out of everything to use it.  So if I’m on Google+ I can’t see my email.  If I’m on my email I can’t use Google+.  It’s a regular conundrum, and one that could have been avoided at that.  A few months ago I got notice from Google about changes being made to all Google Apps accounts.  After this transition, I couldn’t be logged in to my Apps and my other Gmail account simultaneously, which is something I did before, and something that would have circumvented my current issue.  I’ve been reading about some workarounds through Google Reader, but have yet to test.

Now it’s said that Google Profiles and Google+ are still “coming soon” for Apps customers, but then again they said the same thing about Buzz and that never really panned out.  It’s the matter of pure inconvenience to me that is turning me off to the entire idea before I even get it up and running.  An entire subset of paying customers is being left in the dark.  That’s surprising for Google, whose services I’ve generally been very pleased with.  I can’t be even close to the only one who uses Google Apps for personal domain registration and use.  There must be a bunch of users of equal or greater ego and/or nerdiness that does the same thing.  Can this tweak really be that difficult to make?

No, you’re not the only one. I should +1 this article right now! Oh…wait…

  • Chris

    Two comments:
“It’s a regular conundrum, and one that could have been avoided at that.”
Maybe it makes you feel a little bit better to know that you could not have avoided that. True, initially google left you the choice to switch or not, but since then all google apps users have been automatically migrated to the new version.

“I have to be logged out of everything to use it.”
This is half-true. In your google account settings you can enable “multiple sign on” which allows you to sign in to multiple google apps/gmail accounts at the same time. After logging into multiple accounts, account switching is very quick and easy. I have not tested it with google+ though (since I am also a one user “organisation” with the same issue)

I’ve been fighting this problem for quite some time as well. This isn’t the first time google/apps folks have been left behind. I had similar problems when the youtube marriage was consumated. It’s taken me until now to straighten that one out.
And as for “coming soon to apps users…” The first time I saw that was about 8 months ago. Here, let me google the link for you… I just have to log in as [no carrier]

Or you could simply use another browser for Google+…

  • Brent Rivers

Many, many individuals and families use apps for domain and services. It just makes sense. And I just tried what you have been trying only to lead me to searches and ways around it. I will NOT use my old gmail account as I’ve moved everything over to our personal domain. I’m not a paying customer though, so I find it hard to complain too much, especially when I can still use FB! Hear that google, want apps users to jump ship? give us profiles access…

  • http://www.scottpatton.com Scott

as much as I hate to disagree – you can easily add another account to your droid x, select only sync google+ and get access. You don’t have to delete the other one.

Everything else you said was right, but you made the droid thing a bigger deal than it really is.

  • Peter Anton

Chris, your advice gives me hope. I’ll check that out.
But even if it does make using g+ a little easier (in that you don’t have to completely disconnect from the web, change users, reconnect…), it’s still a failure in the making. For g+ to work even as well as fb on some levels, you need to be able to sync and link. I manage a good portion of my life through google apps, so why can’t I use my contact list (in google apps) to start building my circles (in google plus). Oh yeah… I’m using the two as different users.
Even fb can work with my google calendar, which serves as my home base for many calendars. g+ should be able to use the same account as g-apps, making consolidation and synchronization easier.

I’m sure they eventually will work it all together. Should happened from day one though. I don’t pay for my g-apps services, so I’m getting far more than my money’s worth already, but what about those who are paying?

  • Chris

So. Since my last comment I did some testing. I signed up for google+ with my normal @gmail.com account and using “multiple sign on” I can use gmail, docs, reader etc on my apps account while at the same time, in a different tab, being signed on to google+ with the gmail address.

It’s still not great since I don’t want to use that old @gmail account for anything, so until google+ is enabled for apps users I will most likely not use it.

  • Chris

@Peter: re contacts: exporting from the apps account and re-importing it to the gmail account is super quick. and re calendar: I am just sharing calendars with myself across multiple accounts, so that’s easy as well.

I think I would like to give google the benefit of the doubt at this point. After all, they are still in an early beta phase of google+ without even public sign up enabled. Quite possibly, once they open up g+ for the general public they might also open it up for apps users.

And I thought it was just me who was unable to create a Profile. I have 1 account in my “organization”.

I had been contemplating removing my domain from Google apps and moving to Office 365. If I delete my Google Apps account will I be able to create a profile, or will my previous “organization” record be held against me?

  • http://www.jeffreytharp.com Jeff

Right there with you. I signed up with my old gmail account. Had a bit of a look around and promptly logged off. Until they give the Apps thing a go, I’m back to Facebook.

  • Dude

If you are using chrome, just open an incognito window?

  • http://23rdworld.com mahalie

Same problem, possibly worse. The worse part is that I already had a Google Profile before G+ came out, and I was able to use G+ for about a week, but then I was automatically transitioned. Now I cannot access G+, what’s worse, my old profile is there, but I can no longer access/edit it and I’m getting really sick of all these invitations coming into my inbox that I can’t use. About to create a rule to auto delete them. Hows that for growing your market share Google? Really lame move.

  • Johnny G

I’m in the same boat. I have my own surname as a domain and I have received a Google + invite but I cant get to it because I use Google Apps. That is a joke. I got my own domain so i can consolidate all my emails into the one now Google wants me to add another account to their Gmail. No Thank you Google.

  • Navraj

I’m also in the same lot. I wonder how could google people narrow down this service to only gmail users and not broaden it to anybody who has an email id. We’ve already seen this in Facebook and it was also there in Orkut (google’s own purchased baby).

The functionality should have been that use any email id and with a G+ invitation, create your own G+ profile. In this way, people don’t have to rely on their Gmail specific id and can use it with any email id that they are using.

Seems like google people need to learn a basic fact that generally people like simple things. Give them any sort of complexity and they won’t come back to you. Remember there was something like WAVE???

  • Jonathan

I have the same issue. Currently having to log into google+ with an old gmail account via a Chrome Incognito window. I did try the Google multiple sign in, but it didn’t work out for me.

The issue is, Google are treating Enterprise/Education Apps users the same as Personal Apps users. They think everyone with a Google Apps account needs the same level of inter-domain security. I can understand how they want to ensure everything works securely edu and biz users. However a little tickbox that says “Treat users in this domain the same as gmail users, I don’t need domain level security and I want access to everything now!” would be nice.

  • Dallace

I have exactly zero plans to check out Google Plus until it’s available for Apps.

I’ve been on Apps for a while and while it is nice to have them manage my mail, but every step of the way has had some “catch”.

Switching from my iPhone to my HTC Incredible was painful. No google shopping for apps users = no purchased apps under my main account.

Google Voice/Apps/Android Phone was a paint because my contacts for GV and my main apps account would never bee in sync.

I switched to apps to make my life easier, not more irritating, and to be treated like a 2nd class Google Citizen

  • Dan

I have a google apps account for my domain, used for just 1 email address too. I also have a separate gmail profile for my email address – *the same email address* – but I never set up gmail with that account. Both google apps and google+ work. My only issue is I can’t get google+ to look at my google apps contacts, calendar, etc. If I click gmail, it asks me to set up a regular gmail account, that google+ will replace my permanent email with – obviously not an option.

In other words, if you set up a regular google profile with your same email address as your apps account, you can access both at the same time from the same browser. But it is somewhat limiting…

  • Steve M

What seems really nutty is I am paying Google for my mail and that disadvantages me vs. a free user.

  • http://tiptail.com Cynthia

Google Apps is always behind. We only recently got YouTube to connect to Google Apps. That frustrated me to no end, and I have about 3 or 4 gmail/google accounts with various things attached. As they come available on Google Apps I switch them over, but I do wish there was a way to import Videos or pictures from other accounts, and there just isn’t. Google Apps is definitely 2nd class, I do like using it for my own domain, though. That’s why i stick it out.

  • @KregRoenfeldt

I agree. If you want to take over the world, you should include your current existing customers. That being us, the apps users.

  • http://work.justincone.com Justin Cone

Just want to join in the chorus here. As Apps users, we’re some of Google’s most loyal, tech-savvy followers. We also tend to be more vocal and connected than the average bear.

    And yet we’re left behind?

The workarounds above aren’t satisfactory. The whole idea behind Plus is that it flows through your entire web experience seamlessly—without the need for Icognito windows, multiple sign-ins, etc.

    Please, Google. Fix this.

+1 (I like the new meaning of +1)

I’m in the same situation: A personnal Google Apps, for power-users like us, which seem to be always dragging behind the broad Google account. It’s supposed Google Apps to be now usable just like any Google account, but actually it isn’t.

  • Nicolas

    +1 (if I only could…)

  • Ck

    plus bloody one here

  • Tim Lang

Same problem here. Great post. Would love to keep up to date on this issue…

  • Jeremy Harrison

I successfully signed up for a Google+ account using the email on my Google Apps account about 2 weeks ago. Then today I did the mandatory Google Apps upgrade, which merged my apps and non apps stuff together, and now my Google+ account is locked out! I can no longer get in to use it! Remarkably frustrating.

  • http://madesimples.com/index.html James

A workaround solution for now – use 2 browsers (say Chrome and Firefox). Open Google Apps in one browser and your personal Gmail with Google+ in the other.

  • John M.

A little communication on Google’s part could put a lot of this online frustration to rest. They promised us this back in March and have been silent ever since. I fear it’ll be like their empty promise to bring Buzz to Google Apps.

I really regret moving my domain over to Google.

  • John M.

@James, yes we could use a @gmail.com address. But I registered my own domain and brought that domain to Google so I could have my own, single identity online. My Picasa Web account is linked to my personal domain and not any @gmail.com, so I immediately have a disconnect.

Meanwhile when friends and family ask me if they should try out Google+ I tell them “no” because I have no idea how it compares to Facebook.

  • Kim

Google are shooting themselves in their feet if they don’t change this soon. If they want to beat fb they must open for all very fast

  • http://www.limeyboy.com/ limeyboy

The big issue coming up is going to be when google+ opens up ‘brand’ pages. How ridiculous will it be for google apps clients to have to user the free gmail account to create a business page for the BRAND! Surely this is a flick of the switch situation which could be solved very quickly. I find it hard to be believe that larry and serge have to operate two google accounts, one for work and one for everything else?

  • Vilius

    +1

  • Matt Williams

I can’t believe the delay they have in Google Apps using G+. My main hope is that they integrate it tightly into google apps, so that organisations can use it as an inhouse social network, kinda like Yammer or Basecamp messages.

  • AngryNick

Sad, mad, and annoyed. 3 months and counting.

+1 (we are the ones who pay real $$$ and we are last?)
