Co-op moves work better when playing with someone who actually has a brain. Various step jumps, back-to-back gunfights, and the above mentioned healing are showcases for the teaming up mechanics. With the right person, the experience works as it was intended.
Money earned for doing missions can be used to upgrade weapons. A donation option would have been excellent so the player who is falling behind could gain a quick boost from their friend financially. Instead, a weapon switch option exists in game, though finding anyone who will give up the gun they just paid for won’t be easy. The RPG-like elements are fun and give a small purpose to the action instead of building a cliché-ridden story.
Other multi-player modes outside of the campaign revolve around earning more money than the other team. Three game types exist across a limited number of maps, and provide some replay value once the campaign has been beaten. There’s little reason to replay the campaign itself unless achievements are your addiction.
If you can find the right person, your Army of Two experience will be a fun, albeit grinding ride. It’s a mildly unique idea, and the only third person shooter since Gears of War to put a heavy focus on co-op game play. Solo players have no reason to even attempt this one.
