Wii Virtual Console News and Releases for 3/23/2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

Apparently, there's some big basketball thing going on right now, but we can't be bothered with that. We've got too many video games to play, after all! Thanks to the Wii Shop Channel, there's three more games coming out today that might be worth giving a playthrough, depending on if you like certain genre's or not.

As for this week's games, they are as follows:

On WiiWare, Hudson's back with an interesting game title Pop’Em Drop’Em SAMEGAME, which is interesting because of the odd name. Other than that, it's a lot like any number of similar Flash games out there that feature the player having to remove different color bocks in groups of three or more. SAMEGAME does throw in a few new modes and multiplayer action. The most notable of those is “Shame Game,” in which players have to go for the lowest score instead of the highest. It's 500 Wii Points, putting it at the bottom of the price spectrum, but I'm still not sure this game is a must-buy. It's really too bad the Wii Shop Channel doesn't have demos for this very reason.

Over on the Virtual Console, the TurboGrafx16 is king as North Americans get their hands on two previously unreleased titles in the Western Hemisphere. The first of those is Bomberman 94, which was ported to the Genesis for North America under the title Mega Bomberman, but this is the original version of the game. It's your normal old-school Bomberman game, complete with single and multiplayer modes. It's only 700 Wii Points, which isn't too bad of a price for this, but I don't know how much appeal it'll have outside of being unreleased in North America.

Likewise, Konami's Detana!! Twinbee, the sequel to the original TwinBee never made it to North America. A cute and comical vertical-scrolling shooter, Detana!! Twinbee features single player and co-op modes over six different stages. At 700 Wii Points, it's great to play if you're a shmup fan or just want to get a taste of something a little retro.

Bomberman 94 was released on the Japanese Virtual Console at its launch in December 2006, while Detana!! Twinbee showed up in September 2007. They, along with Pop’Em Drop’Em SAMEGAME, are all available for download off the Wii Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of releases for the Wii's digital download service. Until then, happy gaming!
