Wii Virtual Console News and Releases for 2/9/2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

Welcome once again to another week full of releases on the Wii Shop Channel! This time around there are only two new games, which is kind of a bummer, but at least both games are reasonably priced. They also happen to have a theme that ties them together: people getting kidnapped and/or trapped in bad situations. That always seems to pop up as a problem in video games, doesn't it?

This week's games are as follows:

On WiiWare this week comes LIT, a horror/puzzle game from WayForward Technologies, developers of Shantae and Contra 4 among other titles. While the story itself if pretty simple — monsters take over school, boy can't find girl, boy goes in search of girl through school full of monsters — the game play has a little more complexity to it. Since our protagonist, Jake, can only use available sources of light to make a path through the darkness, it's up to him to figure out what needs to be tripped in order for him to make it through the school. All the while, he'll have to avoid the darkness while battling twisted creatures. It's only 800 Wii Points, so the price isn't too bad; the only thing I'm left wondering is about the actual length of the game. If it's long enough, this seems like a pretty good deal.

Opening up the retro vaults, Nintendo has plucked from them the lone Virtual Console title for this week, Wolf on the Battlefield: MERCS. The successor to Commando, this Capcom developed and published top-down run and gun title is also priced at 800 Wii Points and features six main levels of combat action. Once again, the plot is pretty simple and one that's been used before: the president's been kidnapped by a totalitarian regime, and it's up to you to trek through a multitude of different climates in order to set him free, all the while taking out everything in your path. This might not be the last time the Commando series shows up on the Wii Shop Channel — the successor of this title in fact came out last year on Xbox Live Arcade, and there's always a chance a Wii port could be in the workings right now. I have my fingers crossed.

Wolf on the Battlefield: MERCS debuted on the Japanese Virtual Console last November. It, along with LIT, is currently available for download off the Wii Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of releases for the Wii's digital download service. Until then, happy gaming!
