Wii Virtual Console News and Releases for 2/2/2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

Welcome to February, gamers! We're already a month into 2009 and we've had a pretty solid line-up of Wii downloadable titles to start the year off. This week seems to indicate that the trend will continue, as we have three solid titles coming to the Wii Shop Channel. Two are new games while one is an old-school title from a well-known franchise, but probably is a game few people have heard of or remember.

So what's new this week? Let's find out:

On the Virtual Console, we have but one title, Sonic Chaos for the Sega Master System. At only 500 Wii Points, it's on the cheap end of things, but it's still a classic Sonic title, none the less. The story here is pretty much the same as it always has been: Sonic has to stop Dr. Robotnik from accomplishing his goals of taking over the world, blah, blah, blah. You should really know this by now. However, this time around, Sonic has brought Tails with him, the first time he appeared on the Sega Master System and it's 8-bit series of Sonic games. That being said, we're running out of classic Sonic games: could Sonic CD be up next? Please? Pretty please?

Over on the WiiWare side of things, there are two new titles to look for this week. The first is LONPOS, a puzzle game from Nintendo itself, at 800 Wii Points. A WiiWare launch title in Japan, this game is one part Tetris, one part jigsaw puzzle, requiring you to use different shaped pieces to fill a puzzle board as the timer ticks down on you. It's based off a real game of the same name that's incredibly popular in Japan.

The other title is Snowboard Riot from Hudson, which as it sounds like, is a snowboarding game. The game, at 1,000 Wii Points, feels like a mash-up between 1080 Snowboarding and Mario Kart, complete with all the different power-ups and crazy items you can think of. The game supports the Wii Balance Board and has online play over the Nintendo WFC, as well. 1,000 Wii Points is probably a steal for a game Hudson could have charged $20-30 for at retail. Graphically, it doesn't appear to be the most polished and pretty of all WiiWare titles, but it doesn't look awful by any stretch of the imagination.

Sonic Chaos makes its worldwide Virtual Console debut here in North America. It, along with LONPOS and Snowboard Riot, is currently available for download off the Wii Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of releases for the Wii's digital download service. Until then, happy gaming!
