The releases for this week are perhaps a bit of a mixed bag. There's a little bit of a letdown on DSiWare, but WiiWare comes out with three interesting titles, to say the least, while the Virtual Console gets a classic arcade title. It's actually the second time that game has been added to the Virtual Console, but the arcade version is probably the better version to play.
This week's games are as follows:
On DSiWare, we have Mario Calculator (Nintendo, 1 "player," 200 DSi Points) and Mario Clock (Nintendo, 1 "player," 200 DSi Points). They're pretty much what you would expect them to be: Mario-themed clocks and calculators with Mario sounds. But really — do we need these kind of things, Nintendo?
On WiiWare there are three titles this week, Eduardo the Samurai Toaster (Semnat Studios, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points), Rainbow Island: Towering Adventure! (Taito, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) and Let's Catch! (Sega, 1-4 players, 1,000 Points). Eduardo the Samurai Toaster puts you in control of the titular character as you platform, shoot and slash your way across multiple levels. It even features drop-in co-op play and looks frantically fun. Could this be the Wii's Castle Crashers? Rainbow Island: Towering Adventure! is a sequel to a lesser-known Taito game that itself is a lot like Bubble Bobble because ... well, Rainbow Islands was the sequel to Bubble Bobble, except it featured more platforming and rainbows. And Let's Catch! is indeed a game all about catching, developed by Yuji Naka, former head honcho of Sonic Team. It's a lot like Let's Tap!, the other Wii title coming out from Naka's Prope studio, and perhaps that's for good reason: Let's Catch! will have special bonuses unlocked for those who own Let's Tap!. What they are, I have no clue.
On the Virtual Console this week is the arcade version of Space Harrier from the Super Nintendo (1 player, 800 Wii Points). It'll go well with the two other Space Harrier titles on the Virtual Console already, and since it's the arcade version, this is probably the one I would recommend getting.
Space Harrier was released in May on the Japanese Virtual Console. It, along with Eduardo the Samurai Toaster, Rainbow Island: Towering Adventure! and Let's Catch!, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Mario Calculator and Mario Clock are available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.
