What's New on the Wii/DSi Shop Channel for May 25, 2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

As Memorial Day weekend — the unofficial start of summer -- is upon us, the kids are getting restless. Surely, they'll need a few new games to keep them busy on long summer trips or when they're stuck inside on a rainy summer day. Thankfully, even in these tight times, there's always downloadable games to turn to, and this week, we have 5 of them across the DSi and Wii Shop Channels. Well, it's four games and an application, to be honest, but some of these games are definitely the kind of thing parents will be happy to have come July.

This week's game are as follows:

On DSiWare, we have Photo Clock (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) and American Popstar: Road to Celebrity (Gameloft, 1-4 players, 800 Nintendo DSi Points). Yeah, pretty ugly week for DSi owners. Photo Clock is exactly what it seems like: a clock application that you can use with the photos you've taken on your DSi's camera. American Popstar: Road to Celebrity is pretty much what the title says and doesn't look like a very interesting title.

On WiiWare there are two titles again this week, Bubble Bobble Plus! (Taito, 1-4 players, 600 Wii Points) and Adventure Island The Beginning (Hudson Entertainment, 1-2 players, 800 Points). Both are updates of classic retro titles. However, I am not to keen on Adventure Island The Beginning because the game has gone from a traditional 2-D style to a 2 1/2-D style that looks, in my mind, quite ugly. Still, it appears to play pretty close to the original Adventure Island, so if you can overlook the graphical update, it might be something you're interested in. Bubble Bobble Plus! comes with a high recommendation and no such hang-ups.

On the Virtual Console this week is ClayFighter (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points). As a parody of the fighting genre, ClayFighter's ridiculous characters and even more ridiculous moves help players have a little fun with their combat. As a fighting game, it has aged a bit, but it's still fun to fire this title up every now and then.

ClayFighter was released on the PAL Virtual Consoles in February. It, along with Bubble Bobble Plus! and Adventure Island The Beginning, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Photo Clock and American Popstar: Road to Celebrity are available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
