As a reminder, folks, today's your last day to get free points for picking up a new DSi and connecting to the DSi Shop. If you've got one and haven't gotten your 1,000 free points yet, do so now! Heck, there's even a game on DSiWare this week at 1,000 points that might be just what you're looking for if you want a fun title! Oh, and there's some RPG title that no one's ever heard of on the Virtual Console this week. Made by some company called Square? Yeah, didn't think you'd heard of them either.
This week's games are as follows:
On DSiWare, we have Thorium Wars (Big John Games, 1 player, 1,000 DSi Points). This game's a vehicle shooter set in the future, and for a DSiWare title, it looks really, really good in the graphics department. There are a number of different vehicles you'll get to control as you take the battle to the Thorions, a super species of Thorium-based machines, and try to save humanity. Sure, there's a bit of genericness to the plot, but the game looks good, seems to play well, and just might be worth a look.
On WiiWare, we've got Word Searcher (Digital Leisure Inc., 1 player, 500 Wii Points). You like word puzzles? Then this is probably your game. Really, that's about it to this title, which has 100 word puzzles. The only good thing is that it scrambles things up every time you play, so at least it's not the same 100 puzzles over and over and over again. Kinda.
On the Virtual Console this week is a game that helped change the future of videogames, Square's Final Fantasy (1 player, 500 Wii Points). This is the classic NES title that not only saved Square from an early grave, but birthed a franchise that has become synonymous with the RPG genre. It's also been re-released half a dozen times by now, but if you want to play it in its original form and don't have a NES, this is your best bet.
Final Fantasy in arcade form was released in May on the Japanese Virtual Console. It, along with Word Searcher, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Thorium Wars is available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.
Check back next week for the latest round of digital releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
