What's New on the Wii/DSi Shop Channel for August 24, 2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

If I could issue one complaint about the Virtual Console, WiiWare, and DSiWare, it's that the release lists each week are not very predictable. By that, I mean that I never know if we are getting a week of quality titles, like this week, or a week of mostly clunkers, like last week. Nintendo gives little insight in advance as to what we're getting each week, that's a problem. Thankfully though this is one of the good weeks, though it's only got three new games.

This week's games are as follows:

On DSiWare, we have Pop+ Solo (Nnooo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points). A portable version of WiiWare title Pop, it's pretty much the same basic idea: a puzzle game based around popping the right bubbles to unleash chains and increase your score. There are a couple new modes to play around with, including a Challenge Mode where you can create your own challenges. Pop was an early WiiWare surprise and not an awful game, as one might have thought initially, so here's hoping that Pop+ Solo beings a little bit more fun to DSiWare.

On WiiWare, we've got Mr. Driller W (Namco Bandai, 1 player, 800 Wii Points). A single-player version of the classic game Mr. Driller, the Wii version has one decisive advantage: no multiplayer mode. Now, before you start going into a fit of rage over that, remember that the Xbox 360 game Mr. Driller Online was practically ruined because of a number of game-destroying glitches thanks to that game's online multiplayer. It will be a nice break to have the Mr. Driller experience on a current-generation console without having to worry about getting to 150 meters and seeing your game seize up in front of you.

On the Virtual Console this week is Super Nintendo's Super The Empire Strikes Back (LucasArts, 1 player, 800 Wii Points). The Super Nintendo Star Wars trilogy titles are known for being very hard and very unforgiving, even in this day and age. Empire Strikes Back added some gameplay tweaks that made the pain a little more bearable, like the ability to run and shoot at the same time, which Super Star Wars did not have.

Super The Empire Strikes Back debuts on the North American Virtual Console. It, along with Mr. Driller W, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Pop+ Solo is available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of digital releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
