What's New on the Wii/DSi Shop Channel for August 17, 2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

Looking over this week's release list, it's easy to see that it's not exactly strong. The four titles between DSiWare and WiiWare are clearly aimed at a very broad and somewhat younger audience. But before everyone gets up in arms that Nintendo doesn't love you anymore, there's also a Virtual Console release of a tough, classic Sega Genesis game to take some of that anger away.

This week's games are as follows:

On DSiWare, we have two titles: Brain Age Express: Sudoku (Nintendo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) and Guitar Rock Tour (Gameloft, 1-4 players, 500 DSi Points). The first game is, you guessed it, a portable sudoku title from the Brain Age series. Guitar Rock Tour, on the other hand, is a Guitar Hero clone and a port from the iPhone. I can't really strongly recommend either, but for fans of sudoku puzzles or portable rhythm games, you may get some mileage out of these titles.

On WiiWare, there are two titles this week: PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit (1-4 players, 800 Wii Points) and Family Slot Car Racing (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points). PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit is a board game, but done in the style of a pop-up book. Clearly, this one's intended for families and younger kids. Family Slot Car Racing is, no surprise, a family-friendly slot car racing game that really doesn't have a whole lot to it. There's a two-player mode, a "story" mode of sorts and ... well, that's about it.

On the Virtual Console this week is Sega Genesis title The Revenge of Shinobi (1 player, 800 Wii Points). Notoriously difficult, the game is perhaps also known for having unlicensed versions of Batman and Spider-man show up as bosses, something that been fixed for every edition outside of the original, including this Virtual Console release. If you like games that will test your skill, look no further.

The Revenge of Shinobi debuted on the Japanese Virtual Console in March and on the PAL Virtual Console earlier this month. It, along with PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit and Family Slot Car Racing, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Brain Age Express: Sudoku and Guitar Rock Tour available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of digital releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
