What's New on the Wii/DSi Shop Channel for August 3, 2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

Well, this is certainly an interesting week. Not only does the Virtual Console return after a short break, but we get our first really mature WiiWare title. The name of the game alone is probably enough to convince you of that. But which game is it that we're getting this week? And what about DSiWare? Read on to find out!

This week's games are as follows:

On DSiWare, we have Art Style: precipice (Nintendo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points). The latest Art Style game features you as a character who has to play around with blocks: push them, walk over them, climb up on them, and avoid the ones falling from the sky. The purpose of this, of course, is to move the blocks around to score as many points as possible while you walk on them without dying at the same time. It's another interesting DSi title, to say the least.

On WiiWare, there are three titles this week; Overturn (Studio Zan Inc., 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points) and Sexy Poker (Gameloft, 1 player, 500 Points). Overturn is pure robot-on-robot combat (yay!) that feels like a throwback to the arcade days of old and games like Custom Robo and Cyber Sled. It's maybe not as complete of a title as those two, but for only 800 points, it looks like a pretty solid title all around. And it has both Balance Board and Wi-Fi support.

And then there's Sexy Poker. My oh my, Gameloft: what have you wrought? It's basically strip poker without the nakedness, so it's not totally awful, but still ... do we really, really need this game? We could have put a much more deserving game in here this week.

On the Virtual Console this week is Tecmo Bowl. Well, the arcade version, actually (1-4 players, 600 Wii Points). It's not the same as the NES version, though: the arcade version not only has better graphics, but it also has other slight differences in game play. This game was available in a Tecmo arcade compilation on Xbox, and from my memories of the title, it's fun but frustrating at times. There's no NFL license, but that also means no Bo Jackson to have to deal with like in the NES version.

Tecmo Bowl's arcade version debuts on the North American Virtual Console. Overturn and Sexy Poker are available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Art Style: precipice is available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of digital releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
