What's New on the Wii/DSi Shop Channel for April 13, 2009

Part of: Wii/DSi Shop News and Releases

The second week of the DSiWare experiment has begun, and well, it's off to a bit of a slow start. A pair of new DSiWare games lead the charge, though admittedly, aren't the strongest games out there, but it's only week two. After all, WiiWare took a while to improve. Speaking of which, a new WiiWare title and a Virtual Console release round out the rare quartet of games appearing on the Wii Shop Channel.

This week's games are as follows:

Two DSiWare games hit the channel this week. First up is Mixed Messages, the first offering from Activision on the DSi that features 2-21 players and seems to be a virtual version of "Telephone." That's not necessarily a bad thing, as it might be a better interface than using Pictochat, so at only 500 points, it could be a good deal, but only if the game has download play for other DSi users that might not have the title.

Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games is the second DSiWare game, and it's only 200 points. However, it appears to simply be the card-tricks section of the original DS game Master of Illusion rather than something entirely new, which is a big disappointment.

On WiiWare, we've got one new title in the form of TOMY's Party Fun Pirate, based on a classic children's toy over in Japan. Fans of Japanese comedian Hard Gay might remember this from the adventure where he went to Tomy and eventually got a special version of Pop-Up Pirate made based on his likeness. It's 500 points, but a lot like Jenga. I'm not sure how this translates into game form. Jenga was a total bust via Jenga World Tour. Let's hope this is a bit better.

On the Virtual Console, the lone game this week is Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure at 800 points. This is the Sega Genesis version of the title, and while I would have liked to see the Super Nintendo version instead as the Genesis version is a port, it's still a pretty good game for old-school platforming fans.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure debuts on the North American Virtual Console. It, along with TOMY's Party Fun Pirate, Mixed Messages and Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games, is available for download off the Wii Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
