Universal Fighting System by Sabertooth Games hit the collectable card game scene early in the year, pitting characters from the well-known franchises of Penny Arcade, Street Fighter and Soul Calibur III against each other in one-on-one combat.
Since then, not only has the base concept of Street Fighter and Soul Calibur III evolved to feature multiple sets and a longer list of characters, but in December, SNK will enter the brawl with characters from Samurai Showdown and King of Fighters itching for a fight.
SNK will open the gates with Mai and Terry of King of Fighters and Ukyo and Haohmaru of Samurai Showdown being featured in the series’ first starter display. Through booster packs, even more of the KoF and Showdown cast will take part in the melee if players have the luck on their side to pull out character cards such as Lien or Yoshitora.
This month, the Street Fighter and Soul Calibur III card series will be beefed up even more with Street Fighter – The Next Level boosters and the Soul Calibur III Battle Pack. The SF boosters will house new cards and characters such as Akuma, Cammy, Fei Long and Dudley. Much like the one-time Penny Arcade Battle Box, the SCIII Battle Pack allows two players to go toe-to-toe right out of the box with two 60-card decks pitting Siegfried against Sophitia.
Unlike games such as Yu-Gi-Oh! by Konami and Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast where there are multiple characters/monsters in a deck, UFS operates similar to games like Epic Battles and Dragon Ball by Score where the player selects one character to use in their deck. The rest of the deck is then filled with attacks, blocks and situations that affect the battle.
UFS characters all have differing attributes that determine the amount of hit points they have, their maximum hand size and special techniques available only to that specific character. There are also unique cards in the series, which are only usable by specific characters. While deck building, players will also have to take into account elemental abilities – each character has three and every card in the deck has to share at least one element with your character.
