Stefan: "In the end, the ps3 is tecnology for men, the xbox 360 is technology for boys."

Yeah, because the games mean nothing... It's all about them Gigaflops and how much you spend!

JDuran: "still use the DVD format, and are in my opinion, severely limited because of it."

How exactly though? Has a game been limited because of it? How does this affect the gameplay? If the format can handle Gears, then we don't have a problem.

since most people DON'T have an HDTV (and they're expensive)

I think this is a flawed assumption. LCD flatscreens with HD capability are going to be THE big seller for Christmas, and the prices have come down substantially. I'm buying one for our bedroom and I plan to replace the one we've had in our living room for about a year with a better quality model in the next couple of months.

I think that within 6 months you'll see prices come down even more and CRT TVs not being restocked at all. So the HD capabilities of the PS3 aren't wasted, they're just a few months ahead of the market, and that's smart.

I have two links for you all to look at. One is from IGN at E3 2005. The other is from The Inquirer from June of this year.

May i remind you people that blue ray technology has atleast 10 of the leading companies in the world manufacturing this disc such as Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Thomson and most surprising MICROSOFT. So although microsoft has its hd technology, may i ask why they are helping to create these blue ray discs. In their perspective the blue ray discs will be a leading product since these discs will be able to handle such power in graphics and storage space.

Everyone has their own opinions about this but dont you all forget that you are not leading a multi million dollor technology company. If there are so many companies creating these blue ray discs then these companies must have high hopes for this disc for the next generation of technology. I live in Australia and the PS3 doesnt come out until mid May. This has led Australians hyped about this release as many Australians have forgotten their Xboxes and Playstations already after the reports about PS3. Although anyone who doesnt have a PS3 cant really critasize one since they've probably never even touched the console. But it seems like companies around the globe are threatened by the realise that sony has made since its ment to be the next level of technology

The Blu-Ray/ HD-DVD war is going to be interesting to watch for sure. Blu-Ray has more storage but HD-DVD is much much much cheaper to produce. I would not buy either personally until we have a winner.

Most PlayStation 1 disk's had less than 700MB used for games, Most XBox and PS2 disk's had about 4-5GB used for games, some PS2 games used 9GB for games. How can you say DVD memory is enough for next gen gaming?
I don't think most people would be happy if Microsoft suddenly decided to use HD-DVD for games at least Sony always said Blu-Ray was an important part of PS3 and I think Sony has put a lot of effort into making the PS3 as future proof as they can. They added USB support and Bluetooth support for peripherals already available and added Linux support. I don't understand how you can say the XBOX360 is much better when it really is just a slightly more powerful XBOX with wireless support.
Yeah XBOX360 games are great, the PS3 games will also be great.
I'm buying the PS3 because it will have amazing games, it has remote play which will hopefully one day allow me to play my PS3 games anywhere in the world on my PSP, it has free online play and because it has the ability to play HD video out of the box.

Matt: history has demonstrated that just because the status quo works satisfactorily doesn't mean that progress should be halted or slowed. I just got Gears, and it's a great game - wouldn't change a thing with it, but then again, I'm not a game developer. But maybe you've heard the quote that's often attributed to Bill Gates: "640k of memory ought to be enough for anybody"? That was a serious limitation, and it's effects caused headaches for many years afterward.
As to whether game play has improved with the improvement of hardware/technology? Using the logic that the Next-gen consoles are only brighter, shinier, and prettier doesn't fly either. If you believe that, then you should stick with an atari 2600 or even an NES - don't bother with PSx or XBOXx, because the gameplay pinnacle has already been reached, and the only difference with current-gen consoles is that they have better graphics and sound.
