PSP Review: Metal Gear Solid - Portable Ops

Kojima has done it again. Another continuation of the Metal Gear Solid series has finally been created. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is the very first playable portable Metal Gear Solid game. It is made for the PSP and is by far the best looking game on the PSP.

Grab your popcorn and a soda and prepare to learn a game that will make everything you have learned in the Metal Gear Solid Series a lot more easier to understand. The game is based in 1970, six years after Operation Snake Eater. You play as the legendary soldier Big Boss. You’re drugged and imprisoned on a South American base controlled by the Red Army and the Russian Army. You meet up with Roy Cambell and soon break free. The story gets more complicated from there.

In this game, Snake has no help from the Americans nor the Soviet Union due to the fact that he is wanted for spearheading a revolt by his old FOX unit, which is now led by a man named Gene. Your goal is to recruit soldiers that don’t fully agree with Gene’s plans with using Metal Gear to attack the Soviet Union. There are many different jobs to choose from in Portable Ops. The main ones are the Med, Tech, Spy, and Sneaking Units. That’s not the only interesting part in this masterpiece. Every soldier a person recruits has his or her own special abilities. They include Handgun, Submachine Gun, Assault Rifle, Shotgun, and many others as well. There are sub-groups that come with every soldier that you recruit such as Athlete, Quarterback, Artist, Scout, Rescuer, Gambler, and a ton of others.

This game has a very deep storyline and will have you playing for more than 15-20 hours. With cutscenes created by the world famous Ashley Wood (for all of you people who love comic sketches, these cutscenes you have to see). That’s not the only amazing part of Portable Ops—a great part of the game is its deep, emotional soundtrack, which adds a lot to the game. The Portable Ops music was created by composer Norihiko Hibino. The soundtrack consists of 44 tracks and will be available for those hardcore Metal Gear Solid fans on December 20, 2006.
