PSP Review: Metal Gear Ac!d 2

Snake has returned for another card-based mission. The once legendary hero we came to know as Solid Snake has decided to change formats on us, again.

Konami decides to take a break from “Tactical Stealth-Based Action” and introduce us to one of Japan’s most popular hobbies, card games. The Metal Gear Ac!d series is not your ordinary “Sneak, Run, Shoot’em up” game that you could easily accomplish in the past Metal Gears.

Metal Gear Ac!d 1 and 2 have revolutionized the Metal Gear series - in a different way. Yu-Gi-Oh card players who have always wanted a card based game with killing and lots of action have finally been answered. Metal Gear Ac!d 1 was a really fun game, but I’m here to let you know about Ac!d 2.

The game’s storyline is simple, you sneak into a base, kill thousands of soldiers, annihilate some bosses, save the girl, destroy the Metal Gear, and The End, right? Wrong. Metal Gear Ac!d 2 is far more complicated than what people actually think. This card-based Metal Gear is a game that puts you to the test.

In Ac!d 2, your weapons are not your only friend, your deck is too. Every move you make is very important. In the game, you find cards as you complete missions, which can later on be added right to your deck so it is fully upgraded and ready to use for slaughtering your opposition.

Snake, in this game, is introduced to a fearless, blonde-haired killing machine. Her name is Venus. She was introduced after one-fourth of the way through the game when you team up with Wiseman (who is the general with the United States Department of Defense).

The characters in this game were nicely designed (in personality terms), they were probably designed after inmates in an insane asylum.

A lot of people are out to kill Snake for many kinds of reasons. Snake doesn’t remember anything from his past and the only way to get his memory back is to help out Wiseman. The main character after Snake in this game is Dr. Thomas Koppelthorn.

Snake is reminded from a friend of his that he killed Koppelthorn’s wife three years ago. Snake later on finds out as well that he is a clone of Solid Snake and also a Model 3 test subject created by Koppelthorn’s wife. Knowing all of this, he decides to continue his mission and destroy Metal Gear Chaioth Ha Qadesh.

Metal Gear Ac!d 2’s soundtrack was very impressive. Shuichi Kobori, Nobuko Toda, Akihiro Honda and Hiroshi Tanabe composed the soundtrack. They were all composers for the original Metal Gear Ac!d. The music goes perfectly with how the game flows.

Wow. Just wow. After playing the first MGA, I was thouroughly and pleasently surprised with Metal Gear Ac!d 2. First off, Konami fixed the basic actions of the game; you don't need a specific card to crawl, press against a wall, or do cqc anymore, you can just use any card. The decks are more balanced than ever; I found myself having to think strategically before every level, and after playing through the game once, you realize that the strongest cards aren't neccesarily the best. Meaning that every card serves a purpose, even ones you ditched a while ago. The gameplay in this game is unbelievably addicting, and the music is unforgettable; one of the best soundtracks ever to grace my PSP headphones. I seriously suggest you buy this game.
