What better way is there to start using my new shiny PSP, after loading on some music and video, than to fire up Burnout Legends? This is part of the popular Burnout series and combines many features and tracks from its illustrious past. This easy to get into, but hard to master driving game reminds me of the ol' PC/Mac game Carmageddon with its destruction and money for crashing.
Now, unlike Carmageddon, there are no pedestrians or cows to mow down; but it still has that carnage appeal. That is, if you want it to be so. There is a mode called Crash where the object is to destroy as many other vehicles as possible in a certain amount of time. It's a great mode for those who wish for a quick game and a break but don't want to commit to a longer session of racing three-plus laps against opponents.
However, those of a less violent disposition can race with various types of cars starting with compacts and ending with full-blown racers. There is a Pursuit mode where you use a police car to stop a baddie in a given time limit. This is probably the most difficult mode and one that still gets me despite my extensive playing of the game. There is a midway mode where you have to run your opponents off the road in a certain amount of time. Rewards are copper, silver, and gold, with certain tracks victories or dollar amounts ending in unlocking tracks, cars (cars, lorries, buses, and whatever else you can think of that is vaguely vehiclelike), and other goodies (trophies, photos, etc). If you are really good you get to race, crash and bash in the Legend series. If you happen to have mates with a PSP and this game, you can challenge them to take their cars for your own...a form of "pinks", if you wish.
