PS3 Review: LocoRoco Cocoreccho!

Part of: PlayStation Network Games

I first played LocoRoco for the PSP and loved it. It was intriguing, colorful, fun and the music was addicting. The way the game worked is that you tilted the world to make small cute singing blobs reach a goal. As you went along to the goal you would run into obstacles where you would have to either join all of your blobs together into one big one to just roll over an obstacle, or blow your big guy up into the mini versions to slip through the smaller spaces. The PS3 version is a bit different... quite a bit different.

Lost is the fun world tilting. Now you’re a butterfly that kind of guides the LocoRoco along the path. The blobs aren’t always responsive to the call of the butterfly, which makes it a little frustrating, and you have to call to them rapidly to make them jump which makes it hard to steer them in the right direction. Also, instead of just trying to get a required number of LocoRoco through the maze to move onto the next level.

There are Mui Mui Gates, which act as obstacles that require you to have a certain number of LocoRoco to advance. Once you have enough, the course becomes expanded and a new area of the maze is opened. Like the Mui Mui Gates you get some obstacles that make you use the Sixaxis controller in different ways, like tilting it side to side to cause a platform to swing your blobs to safety or shaking it up and down to get sleeping LocoRoco to fall from branches. The motion controls give the game a fun interactive quality. Some other features of the game include full 1080p HD support and three additional hidden mini-games.

If you’re a big fan of the original, like I am, you may be a little disappointed with the new style of game play. But for the $6.99 price on the PSN and the fun songs (which are still my favorite part of the game) it’s worth getting.

LocoRoco Cocoreccho! is rated E (Everyone) by the ESRB for Comic Mischief.
