PS3 Impressions: Resistance 2 Multiplayer

Many AAA titles focus heavily on the multiplayer aspects of their games. Ever since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare revolutionized the multiplayer first person shooter gameplay, a lot of new games have followed suit on their leveling system. This is not a bad thing because it gives you a sense of purpose for wreaking havoc on the battlefield.

Resistance 2 is a huge improvement over Resistance: Fall of Man. The enormous maps are incredible and also filled with lots of players to compete against.  Resistance 2 does a good job in keeping order within the giant matches by creating and assigning each player into a squad. If you die, you will be spawned around your squad, which is nice to keep you in the action.

The typical multiplayer modes are here: Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, and a Capture the Flag-type game. The highlight of the multiplayer experience is the skirmish game type. This is an objective-based game; strategy with your squad is key to securing your victory. The objectives ranged from securing a node to eliminating a priority target. The skirmish game mode is definitely the most hectic game mode, but nevertheless the most fun, because of the constant action that you are thrown into.

You level up as you kill enemies and complete objectives. With each level you unlock different skins and gear for your character to deck him out. You unlock both human and chimera outfits at the same time; of course the higher the level the cooler the gear.

The biggest selling point for Resistance 2 Multiplayer is the co-op. Insomniac created a rather intense and unique way of delivering co-op, in that it's set up like an RPG dungeon crawler. You are in a squad of eight, completing objectives, and battling against hundreds of chimera. You are given the choice of three different classes: Medic, Soldier, and Spec Ops. In order to even consider completing the mission, it is necessary to have a party of at least one of each class. You need a Medic to heal everyone, the Soldier to tank, and the Spec Op to replenish ammo.
