PS2 Review: Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Marvel Ultimate Alliance was released this week on several different platforms, including Xbox, Xbox 360, etc. Last week, my 9-year-old and I tackled Justice League Heroes and he blew through it in four days (aided and abetted by his mom and older brother), so I didn’t know if we were up to another foray into the world of superheroes.

My two sons and I went on another mission this week to pick up Marvel Ultimate Alliance on PS2, but I wasn’t overly thrilled about playing the game. Ravensoft developed Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and they also developed X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, which I wasn’t so fond of, and never bothered to play much or finish.

In fact, I don’t know if either of those two games got finished by anyone. The game play just got too repetitive for my tastes.

That problem doesn’t exist in Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Instead, there’s an overall story plot that makes the levels and missions unfold like the chapters in a well-developed and lengthy novel. I’m loving the game as much for the sheer storytelling as I am the graphics and hero worship.

There are 23 heroes in the game (including the four unlockable ones in the PlayStation 2 version). Altogether, there are 140 different Marvel characters (heroes as well as villains) to be discovered.

You can play as most of your favorites, including Spider-Man, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Iron Man, Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Nick Fury, and others.

The bad guys include Dr. Doom, Mandarin, M.O.D.O.K., Tiger Shark, Attuma, Bullseye, Crimson Dynamo, to name just a few.

All of the characters are equipped with unique looking powers that actually give you the feel of playing as the character. I absolutely loved Captain America’s shield-throwing ability in the early levels. I would throw the shield and, while it was bouncing around taking out enemies all around me, I would pounce on others.

I'm not really that big of a game person but this does sound like fun. Congradulations of being picked for this week. That is just fantastic!
