PS2 Review: Justice League Heroes

The Justice League of America has been in comics since the 1960s, but their precursor — The Justice Society of America — started back in the 1940s. Both groups gravitated around a single theme: a band of superheroes get together to take on menaces too large for any one superhero to handle.

Gardner F. Fox, a multi-talented and prolific writer, penned many of the tales of the JSA and JLA, as they became affectionately known. Fox tended to put a lot of science in his stories. That came from his background as a sci-fi pulp writer.

But his sheer handling of tales pushed him into immortality as a comics legend. In fact, one of the Justice League episodes (the animated series that ran from 2001-2006 and is now coming out on DVD) was devoted to Fox's idea of the heroes.

With the television presence and a Game Boy game already out there (as well as one really bad fighting game), fans knew it wouldn't be long before the Justice League got its due reward. After all, Superman and Batman have been featured in many games. Shamefully, several of those games really got deservedly ripped as well.

Snowblind Studios developed the game for Eidos. Snowblind also developed the two Champions of Norrath games and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

Justice League Heroes gets so many things right, though. It's a one to two player(s) game that is a straight actioner. Although there is an attempt made at an RPG "feel" that allows players to choose where to put their bonus points to strengthen various powers, the game is truly more arcade-based.

But that's one of the things that was done right, although the older comic book fans might disagree. However, they have City of Heroes and City of Villains to parade around in if they want a more independent junket through the land of capes and crimes.

We picked up the game recently when it broke on October 17. As a sidebar to let you know how much we'd been looking forward to it, my 17-year-old, my 9-year-old, and I all loaded up in the car and went hunting.
