PS2 Preview: Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s

Are you still listening to 80s music? Quiet Riot, Dio, Twisted Sister, Poison, and other 80s bands will be your medicine in this third installment of Guitar Hero.

You can think of Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s like an expansion to Guitar Hero II. It has 30 tracks in all, including master tracks "I Wanna Rock" and "I Ran (So Far Away)." The rest are all covers, which range from pretty good to "that doesn't sound right."

The venues have been redesigned with an 80s theme, and all the characters have too. Grim's changes are the best, wearing 3-D glasses - you can't get more 80s then that.

If you're familiar with Guitar Hero II, you can jump right in and head bang to some of the best hair metal, no spandex required. Songs are grouped just as before, from "Opening Licks" to "Furious Fretwork."

Just as with previous games in the series, Encore: Rocks the 80s ups the difficulty. Of course there still is easy and practice mode, but you will be working overtime to five-star songs on Expert. Hopefully you are proficient in playing chords, because 80s music has a lot of 'em, and Encore: Rocks the 80s throws them at you fast.

Additionally, you will find Blue notes on Easy and more Orange notes on Medium that will creep up on you if you aren't careful. This should get people playing the game on Easy to move toward Medium, which makes the game more fun anyways.

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s will ship in July exclusively for the PS2, and will come with a SG guitar controller. It is also the last Guitar Hero game developed by Harmonix, as Guitar Hero III is being handled by Neversoft.

Stay tuned for a full review of Encore: Rocks the 80s when the game ships this July.
