PlayStation Network Update: 12/11/2008

Part of: PlayStation Network Updates

Weeks like this make me scratch my head and wonder. So many contradictions in the add-on content front. First up, we have the awesome but overpriced Street Fighter II LittleBigPlanet costumes; again if there was a level included, I would be all over this.

There are a number of game enhancement packs that cost some serious dollars. The Force Unleashed has another costume pack as well as a Jedi Temple level pack. While the content is intriguing, the price is a little steep for both. Tom Clancy's End War also has a $10 add-on called the Escalation expansion pack; again it sounds great, just a little bit too expensive for a few maps and units. Rounding out the pay content is a Gearhead ball pack for High Velocity Bowling at the inexpensive price of one dollar.

On the flip-side is the large amount of free content available this week. The first half of the free Santa Sackboy costume is available to all. We also have a free Trick Shot pack for High Velocity Bowling to counterbalance the one you need to pay for. One of the best titles of the PS3 launch, Resistance: Fall of Man, has 2 map packs that have been reduced to the great price of free. If you managed to hold off buying them (and still play the game), it is a great time to snap them up.

Age of Booty offers up two more free map packs and the big winner is the Blow it Up Again expansion for Mercenaries 2. This large expansion should get more people interested in Mercenaries 2 again (hence the title) and the amazing price of free sounds great to me.

Out of nowhere there is also a new downloadable game called PowerUp Forever.  This is a shmup of sorts that has your ship absorbing power from defeated enemies and evolving over time. If anyone gives this a go, let me know what you think.
