PlayStation Network Update: 01/24/2008

Part of: PlayStation Network Updates

Another stellar update on the PSN today, with everything from add-on content to demos to themes. The huge update is the Devil May Cry 4 demo which also premiered on the Xbox Live Marketplace the same day (as opposed to days earlier). This demo will surely have many a fanboy downloading each version to see how it compares. I am one of those fanboys and having played both there is very little difference, 360 is a tiny bit sharper but the PS3 seems smoother and has an edge in the particle effects. Bottom line, both look and play great with no slowdown that I could detect.

On to the rest of the content we have a second demo in the form of The Club, a fun mix of Tony Hawk and any Third Person Shooter you can think of. PixelJunk Monsters makes it's debut this week as well, it is a stylish version of Fortress Defense featuring great animations and character designs, it is priced to go for a limited time, so if you are interested download and enjoy.

On the add-on front we have yet another free Folklore add-on, this time it is a fan created Folk from a contest that was run. Guitar Hero fans and older rockers can rejoice and mellow out to the Classic Rock Pack just released. Rock Band on the other hand gives you three Oasis songs available individually or in a pack. Stranglehold fans should be both happy and sad with the addition of the map pack, while it is great to see this content, the price is quite steep at $14.99 with just multiplayer additions to the package.

Rounding out the update is the PS1 classic Jet Moto 2 for the PS3 and PSP, some pretty marginal trailers and game videos and two new themes. The themes featured here are actually pretty good, the PixelJunk Monsters one is my current favorite.

All in all this is a phenomenal update to the PSN and in particular I like seeing new PS1 and full games added on a regular basis. I don't think anyone can complain about content anymore, we simply need to see Sony add in-game XMB so all the forum posters can stop appending 'we want in-game XMB' to every freaking' one of their posts! Note, all prices are in U.S. funds if listed.
