This is ole' school top-down action gaming at its best. It's simple, but keeps you coming back for more. There is a plot which keeps you wanting to continue and it does not take that much oomph to run it. Think of it as a bit like Diablo II slimmed down with guns instead of swords and magic -though the game has a two-handed sword in that is quite useful in a pinch.
Released on both the Mac and the PC, this game has simple requirements and is rather easy to get into. Even if you can't be arsed to read the docs on it it will not take you much time to get into it. Most of the game revolves around the arrow keys for movement and the mouse for shooting/aiming. While this might take a bit to get used to, once you get a handle on it there is not much problem.
As you might imagine from the name of the game you are chasing various supernatural nasties all over the world attempting to stop their nefarious activities. Some thought has gone into the plot with a few twists and turns. As with much of the occult you never quite know who is on your side or not. Still with the various weapons kicking around you are able to defend yourself, more or less, from all of the nasties that attempt to bring you to a dire end. As with any such game the most effective weapon is the shotgun so look after those cartridges. Make sure that every barrel and box is examined as that is where you will find yer ammo to keep you alive. Monsters drop ammo and various trinkets as they do in such games.
This game strikes me as done by someone who loves his gaming and wants to give people a bit of uncomplicated, if not simplistic, fun. The attention to detail is excellent; it looks quite good and the game runs rather well. You can either run it full screen or in a window. I managed to crash it once, but that is probably something silly I did, as I can crash anything.
The game strikes me as the perfect thing when you want to pop in and play something fun that does not take too much to get into. It's not really a session game but one that you dip in and out when you have a few minutes to spare. None of the levels are too long which makes this easier than with many games.
Sometimes a gamer just wants for a bit of top-down action. This is the perfect antidote for that need.
Lava Mortus is rated T (Teen) by the ESRB for Content Descriptors. This game can be found on PC and MAC.
