PC Game Review: Guitar Praise

This computer guitar music game cranks up the concert content with more than 50 tracks total including music artists Skillet, Jennifer Knapp, Newsboys, Petra, Casting Crowns, Reliant K, Pillar, 12 Stones, tobyMac and Stellar Kart. Song sets expand as players progress through this active, music experience.

The four difficulty levels (based on five colored buttons on the guitar controller) range from easy to expert, challenging gaming guitarists to unlock more songs and guitar types while boosting their scores. Essential profiles help players gain ground quicker as well as keep bragging rights in the statistic department. The record keeping on each track boosts the replay value to a very high level.

The reaction time on the guitar controller is decent. The wireless controller (included with the game) favors early reaction time on the fret buttons. The guitar controller has the standard strum bar and a whammy bar plus volume control buttons right at the player’s fingertips.

Other game guitar controllers won’t work on this game, so players will need to invest in a second controller for the strong two-player game modes. Players can complement each other by playing bass and lead guitar, or both play lead guitar in two-player mode. Players can also tilt their guitar up sharply to get more bonuses or "razzle" their opponent in power dual mode. Special bonuses and multipliers increase the points quickly as high talent points tallies yield new onscreen guitars with richer sounds and different effects.

The colors, borders and font are distinct enough to avoid any confusion or frustration during gameplay. The gameplay screens are pretty self-explanatory. Hold the note on colored streamed, then make a well timed release for high points. Hitting the right combination when the colored cues are spinning yield bonuses. Lyrics appear on the right on one-player mode then move to the center in two-player mode. Lyrics can also be turned off in the options if they get too distracting.

Developers need to boost the audio quality in the likely future expansion packs. Setup challenges are partially alleviated by widescreen options (if you have this option on your monitor) for players who don’t have a projection/laptop related setup for viewing. A strong all ages game with endless hours of challenge and free flowing fun. Visit www.guitarpraise.com for ordering information.

Hi. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but what about the actual game? Did you enjoy it? Was It any good? This isn't so much a review as it is a listing of tech specs. What about the actual gameplay?

I didn't care for the game much, in fact I played it probably less than 30 minutes (not kidding). I now have jamband which is a brand new christian rock band game that is much, much better than guitar praise, so that's the game I play now. Cool thing is, is that my guitar praise guitar works with jamband. The graphics are much better than guitar praise but not as good as guitara hero or rock band. The songs for jamband are really good. i didn't like the setlist with guitar praise at all. just my 2cents.

This is from a non-Christian (but not atheist either) gamer... and I'm confused here as to why they had to make a "watered-down" version of Guitar Hero just for the bible-carrying paranoid loonies. I know this is a PC game, but if you don't like the content of video games, don't buy a system. Same goes with computers... if Mrs Johnson doesn't like Little Timmy looking at naughty pictures of girls she shouldn't get the computer for her Gift From God.

I'd only recommend this to incredibly sheltered people who aren't true gamers and only want it so they can enjoy what the majority of people are getting into but in their own incredibly sheltered, "won't go outside because the beast will get me" way. If you ARE Christian but aren't all sheltered, get regular Guitar Hero/Rock Band - don't want to feel like you're missing out on an awesome game.

I am a christian, and I like Guitar Hero, among many other popular games. However, I have wanted some of my favorite artists such as TobyMac and Skillet on a game similar to GH. This is perfect for me, as it has two good things combined together.

Also, as I am a student game programmer, I absolutely know how hard it is to get games like this to work, and I am extremely impressed with the overall quality of the game coming from a small company. You must remember the approximate size of the development teams when comparing games.
